Cleveland Indians logo skewered by Native American group

The National Congress of American Indians published a powerful image that truly speaks for itself.

This visual juxtaposition rightfully skewers the Cleveland Indians logo, by effectively portraying its racially-charged stereotyping. The fictional Chief Wahoo of the Cleveland Indians is an abomination, and this picture says it all.

Look at how similar the two fake teams are to the real one. Hypothetical New York sports franchise “The Jews” has a giant smiling face of a man with dark hair and wearing a kippah. The “Chinamen” of San Francisco is similarly offensive.

So why does MLB continue to tolerate the Cleveland Indians?

Look at the Cleveland Indians again; versus the other two. I made the graphic even bigger.

And you’ll never look at the Cleveland Indians the same way again. Just like the NFL team in Washington, D.C. it’s desperately time for mascot change. Things change, times change, standards change. Humanity progresses, we develop a better understanding of the world and superior morality. Time for the Cleveland Indians to evolve too.

  1. I’ve been telling anyone who would listen about Chief Wahoo for years that the campaign against Chief Illiniwek was misguided when there were such obviously discriminatory representations like this out there. I understand the distinction between pro sports teams and schools who receive federal funding, but the clear disparity of treatment between Chief Wahoo and Chief Illiniwek makes me crazy. I think both Chief Wahoo and the NCAA have outlived their usefulness and should be history. Too bad Ed O’Bannon doesn’t have a bone to pick with the Indians, too.
