Netherlands National Team Manager Louis van Gaal had his first day on the new job. The Manchester United training ground manager Louis van Gaal was welcomed with a floral tribute in the town centre of Manchester. It was composed of 25,000 tulips shipped in from Van Gaal’s native Holland and measured 18 feet by 12 feet.

The floral arrangement was paid for by bookmaker William Hill and was on show in the Cathedral Gardens of the National Football Museum.

Pretty cool, huh?

By the way, it should be pointed out that LVG had the best soundbite of the entire World Cup. Before his Dutch side defeated the host nation 3-nil in the third place game, Van Gaal pointed out that the one game loser’s bracket is stupid and pointless.

He said the fixture ‘has nothing to do with sports in my opinion’, adding: ‘No tournament, no football tournament, especially in the last stage, should you have players playing for third or fourth.

‘This match should never be played. I’ve been saying that for ten years; it’s unfair. There is only one award that counts and that is becoming world champions.’

He’s right, why risk injury and calamity, for no reasonable reward at all. Tomorrow Louis van Gaal will have his first press conference as United Manager. It’s his “unveiling.” Then the team departs to the United States to begin their preseason exhibition tour of the United States. They’ll first take on the L.A. Galaxy of the MLS.
