Preview: #6 Michigan State versus #10 Ohio State

#3 Ohio State Buckeyes: College Basketball 111 in 111

ohio state buckeyes cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

During last season, it seemed very likely that the Ohio State Buckeyes would lose all five starters.  However, Jared Sullinger and William Buford chose to return to school rather than enter the NBA Draft.  Those two will anchor a young, but very talented team that should once again be in national title contention and could possibly be even better than last year’s team that won 34 games.

Ohio State Cruises Past UT-San Antonio 75-46: NCAA 2nd Round Rapid Reaction

William Buford

Games can be unpredictable this time of year, after all this is why it’s called “March Madness.” The one exception has been the 1-16 matchup. As a matter of fact, the one seeds were a perfect 104-0 heading into the 2011 NCAA tournament. After Pittsburgh and Duke won by 23 and 32, respectively, Ohio State continued the streak by beating No. 16 seed UT-San Antonio 75-46.

Buckeye Recap: #13 Wisconsin Hands #1 Ohio State First Loss of the Year

thad matta

How they lost: The Grateful Red and their rally towels were in full force Saturday as #13 Wisconsin gave undefeated #1 Ohio State its first loss of the season. The game was neck-and-neck in the first half. David Lighty’s lay-up in the waning seconds, off of pedestrian defense by Wisconsin, gave Ohio State a 28-26 lead at halftime.

The Buckeyes pulled out to a 40-30 lead in the first five minutes of the second half thanks in large part to William Buford and his silky smooth step-back jumper. He used the same move over and over, almost toying with the Badgers. Buford finished the game with 21 points.

Rapid Reaction: Ohio State 73, Illinois 68

It’s the return of the sad Illini face, boys and girls.

The Illinois Fighting Illini suffered their first home loss of the season on Saturday, taken down by the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes 73-68.

Dubious officiating, unfortunate bounces and, most importantly of all, terrible shooting plagued the Illini all game and ultimately led to their demise. [Read more…]

THE Ohio State Buckeyes Big Ten Preview

jared sullinger

Ohio State has stormed to a 13-0 start, winning every game by double-digits. They are also 1-0 against the AP top-25 (win against former #10 Florida). While they haven’t been tested early on, the Big Ten schedule will prove just how tough the Buckeyes really are.

Game to Watch: OSU at Wisconsin, February 12. The Buckeyes are 0-7 at the Kohl Center during Bo Ryan’s current nine-year stint with the Badgers. This includes the Greg Oden/Conley runner-up team of ’06-’07. By the time these two teams meet, the Buckeyes may very well be the #1 team in the nation. The Badger football team already knocked off the then #1 ranked Buckeyes. Could this be a similar fate for the OSU basketball team? This may just be the best game out of the entire Big Ten schedule, let alone Ohio State’s.

Can Ohio State go all the way?

katie witham ohio state

Katie Witham, Ohio State reporter for the Big Ten Network, discusses OSU potential with fellow Buckeye expert Paul M. Banks

For part two of this interview click here

(PMB) The Buckeyes have been placed into my regional each of the past 3 weekends, so after spending so much quality time with Thad Matta lately, (this following a season covering two Big Ten teams: Illinois and Northwestern) I sort of feel like I’ve earned my Master’s in OSU b-ball, and I may be a doctoral candidate if they reach Indy. I imagine, due to your work with the Big Ten Network, you’re maybe in the same place?ohio state buckeyes

(KW) Definitely!  But we’re being paid to watch and talk about sports so can we really complain?! I consider myself extremely fortunate to be doing what I’m doing.  Ohio State is known for their excellence in all of their athletic programs and Thad Matta is one of most amiable and genuine coaches I have ever had the chance to interview.

OSU’s William Buford: College Basketball’s Best Second Banana?

william buford

By Paul M. Banks

With all the attention on Naismith Award favorite and Oscar Robertson Trophy winner Evan Turner, a few Ohio State Buckeyes often go overlooked. And there are three on the current squad who have a good chance of joining Turner in the NBA in the next couple of years. So I took it upon myself to profile and interview the forgotten Buckeyes. In our final installment (well, maybe we’ll do a feature on Jon Diebler, I don’t know we’ll see how this week goes) we look at the man who took over the leadership role when Evan “the Villain” Turner missed 6 games due to a fractured L2 and L3 vertebrae.
