Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Finishing in the cellar of the ACC last season cost Seth Greenberg his job as head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies.   Assistant James Johnson was named new head coach but only has eight scholarship players on his active roster for the upcoming season as he tries to rebuild VA Tech’s program.

Another Shooting at Virginia Tech; 2 Dead, Campus on Lockdown

Virginia Tech, the site of an April 2007 massacre in which Cho Seung-Hui shot 32 people dead on campus before killing himself, is on high alert lockdown again, in the wake of another shooting.

Two people, including a policeman are confirmed dead. Details from this story are only just beginning to develop. The suspect has not been apprehended and students are being told, “Stay indoors. Secure in place.” Alert sirens went off and emails were sent out.

An alert on the Virginia Tech school’s website said: “There is an active campus alert in Blacksburg. Everyone should seek shelter or stay where you are. Blacksburg Transit service is suspended until the alert is lifted.”

LSU, Alabama Top First BCS Rankings

With seven weeks done in the college football season, the first edition of the BCS rankings came out on Sunday night, and there were a few surprises through the list. The LSU Tigers ended up edging the Alabama Crimson Tide on the list, finishing a mere .0003 points ahead of them in average. The Oklahoma Sooners ended up finishing in the third spot, followed closely by conference rival Oklahoma State at fourth. Boise State rounded out the top five, with Wisconsin, Clemson, and Stanford close behind.

#11 Virginia Tech Hokies vs. #13 Clemson Tigers: Brutally Honest Game Preview

I guess I was wrong about the ACC– on many levels. It’s a much stronger college football conference than I thought. Much better. And it’s not Florida State who’s the national title contender this year. The winner of the Clemson Tigers vs. Virginia Tech Hokies game will advance to the national title consideration discussion.

Loser…gets to find solace in fighting on for a ACC conference title.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Virginia Tech Hokies fans have to be asking themselves, “What will it take for us to get into the NCAA Tournament?”  For the third time in the past four years, the Hokies finished with a winning record in the ACC but had their bubble burst on Selection Sunday.  This season, VA Tech will be lucky to even be in the consideration for an invite to the Big Dance.

#9 Virginia Tech Hokies: College Football 77 in 77

The state of Virginia and Virginia Tech have made the news a lot lately, although not always for what you might want/expect. The second strongest earthquake in state history rumbled across the state Wednesday. Hurricane Irene is set to batter/drench the state this weekend. Yesterday, the school’s most famous college football player, and arguably most famous/infamous alum, Michael Vick was the centerpiece of the sports media world yesterday, as ESPN made a dumb-ass decision revolving around a picture of him.

Go here for pics of the earthquake wreckage and cleanup.

And three weeks ago, another gunman was spotted stalking the Blacksburg, Va campus. Which reminded us all of April 2007; when we were all Virginia Tech Hokies.

It’s all enough to let us have fun by escaping into college football.
