USC Trojans vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Brutally Honest Game Preview

It’s not often that we pick a game with two unranked teams for BHGP. And other than September non-conference or bowl games, we don’t do the intersectional thing much either. But this is college football’s top inter-sectional rivalry: USC Trojans vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  Both are on the cusp of the AP top 25, so winner gets a national ranking.

USC has won 11 of the last 14. Notre Dame had an 11-game winning streak from 1983-1995.

This rivalry began in 1926, when Knute Rockne became the first Midwestern coach to take a team to the West Coast (Notre Dame won 13-12) and the teams have meet every season since (taking 1943-45 off due to travel restrictions during World War II).

Notre Dame-USC to get Increased TV Exposure on Rivalry Weekend

Don’t you love rivalry weekend? Or more specifically, rivalry weekends in college football? I think it’s genius marketing that they have almost every team play their bitter rival on the last weekend of the year. Last Saturday, we had Northwestern versus the Illini in the Wrigleyville Classic, Stanford-Cal in “the Big Game” and more.

This Saturday we get more nick-named blood-feuds like “the Egg Bowl” (Mississippi vs. Mississippi St.) “the Apple Cup (Washington vs. Washington St.) and of course, my favorite “THE GAME” (Michigan Wolverines vs. Ohio State Buckeyes.

But don’t forget ND-USC, because ABC certainly isn’t.

USC Stripped of FWAA 2004 National Title

usc-cheerleader cheering for wrong team

USC’s 2004 Grantland Rice Trophy, awarded to the Trojans by the Football Writers Association of America for their national title, will be revoked and the team barred from consideration for the award following this season.  The FWAA trophy doesn’t have the same juice in the college football world as the BCS national title (or its predecessor the AP national title) but this is still big news because there has never been a revocation of a major national collegiate football championship prior to this year.

Citing the June 10, 2010, NCAA Infractions Report, Tim Griffin, 2010 FWAA President, stated as follows in his letter notifying USC of the FWAA’s decisions: “Had these facts been known, USC would not have been selected for the award … in light of standards applicable to FWAA poll participants, award candidates and award recipients.”
