Notre Dame Football players discuss Twitter policies

tyler-eifert-notre-dame-football

Twitter is one of the greatest inventions ever for a sportswriter. Is it also a blessing for Notre Dame football? Or a curse?

Twitter gives the reporter a chance to obtain legitimate quotes from players and coaches without actually having to be at the stadium. And sometimes the quotes are much more interesting than what you hear on gameday, because they haven’t been filtered. But to quote famous Notre Dame football fan Taylor Swift “trouble, trouble, trouble” can arise.

13 months ago, Notre Dame football DL Louis Nix (@IrishChocolate9) posted a tweet saying he may leave Notre Dame football and not return. That tweet caused a great deal of distraction for Coach Brian Kelly and his team, and it forced the coach to contemplate a new and stricter policy on what he deems “inappropriate” social media posts.

Notre Dame QB derby: Andrew Hendrix, the other “favorite”

It’s a four way battle to start at quarterback in Notre Dame, perhaps the most high profile position in all of college sports. But after upon further inspection, it’s most likely a two way competition this college football season.

Last year’s starter Tommy Rees had the inside track to regain the position this year, but the charges he’s facing: underage drinking, resisting arrest and battery, means he’s likely fallen down the depth chart.

Discipline problems like these are hard to ignore, and that will open up the door for the more inexperienced signal callers.

Isn’t it time to get ‘experienced’ with Hendrix? Andrew Hendrix played some last year, throwing 18 of 37 for 247 yards, 1 TD, 2 picks. He also played in the Champs Sports Bowl loss to Florida State, going 3 of 8.  Is he the QB of the future?

Notre Dame QB derby: Everett Golson, the new front-runner?

Everett Golson is perhaps the QB of the future, and the future could be this fall.

Golson was the talk of the spring game, as he turned in the best performance of the four quarterbacks, going 11-for-15 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees and sister both have alcohol arrest record

meghan-rees-mug-shot

Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees will held to court on May 17th, in which he’ll face four misdemeanor counts, including resisting arrest, battery and underage consumption. But he’s not the only Rees sibling who’s run afoul of the law via alcohol. His sister Meghan Rees was kicked out of the Purdue game last fall and arrested for an alcohol offense as well.

Is this is a new “record” in college football. Lots of starting quarterbacks have gotten arrested for booze-related activities, but how many have had a sister do the same? And just a few months apart at that? This is breaking new ground right? Let’s hope former South Carolina signal caller Stephen Garcia doesn’t have a sister.

Let’s review the situation:

Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees arrested, jailed for multiple charges

tommy-rees

Off-the-field incidents continue to plague the Brian Kelly regime at Notre Dame. Last night brings another- this one involving the sort of starting QB Tommy Rees and a starting linebacker in Carlo Carlabrese.

Rees was jailed on a preliminary felony charge of battery on a police officer and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, minor consumption and public intoxication. Local law enforcement officials claim he ran from a police officer and then kneed him to the chest when confronted. Rees also allegedly registered 0.11 percent on a blood-alcohol test.

2012 Notre Dame Spring Game notes, nuggets and tidbits

tommy-rees

The number one topic is of course the four-way starting quarterback battle. Unlike other spring games, Notre Dame lets them pretty much go live at QB, which is a lot cooler than the signal caller wearing a red, no-contact jersey. Here’s the statistical breakdown.

Everett Golson 31 snaps, 11-15 passing, 120 yards, two TDs, 0 picks. 6 carries for 25 yards. Tommy Rees 7-14-1, 84 yards, 0 TDs, 1 rush for 1 yard in 26 snaps. Andrew Hendrix 4-9-1, 51 yards, 1 TD, 2 rushes for 13 yards in 15 snaps.

–Much ballyhooed blue-chip recruit Gunner Kiel came in during the second half and went 5-10-1, 57 yards, 3 carries for 15 yards. The story of last season was essentially too many turnovers, especially so from the quarterback position, and especially at the most inopportune times.

“We had two interceptions in particular, where we’ve seen that movie before,” Brian Kelly told the media after the game. The fans saw both Kiel and Rees get picked off soon after entering the game. Rees’ interception came on his fifth attempt, Kiel his second.

Notre Dame Football Has Some Serious Issues

notre-dame-brian-kelly

The Fighting Irish lost five of thirteen games on their schedule this season. This is unacceptable for the most prominent college football program in the country.

The team has floundered ever since the Lou Holtz tenure ended. There are some glaring obstacles to success that must be addressed before moving forward.

#4 Stanford Crushes #22 Notre Dame: (Andrew) Luck of the non-Irish

andrew_luck

Two years ago Toby Gerhart, now with the Minnesota Vikings then with the Stanford Cardinal, ran for over 200 yards on Notre Dame. The performance moved him up the Heisman Trophy pecking order, and he lost (by the slimmest margin of all time) to current member of the New Orleans Saints then member of the Alabama Crimson Tide Mark Ingram.

Tonight Andrew Luck, the mortal lock to the be the #1 pick in the NFL Draft in April intended to stake his claim for the most prestigious trophy in college football by exploiting the Fighting Irish. But there was no luck of the Irish. And it actually wasn’t luck of the Cardinal either. It was skill and talent of the Cardinal: Luck, Colby Fleener, Stepfan Taylor etc.

Notre Dame Football and Brian Kelly: How does this story end?

Notre Dame Stadium

Halfway through his second season at the pressure-packed helm of Notre Dame football, Brian Kelly has experienced horrible tragedy and made almost every mistake imaginable.

From the death of Declan Sullivan to horrible public admission that the players he recruited were on a different level than those he inherited, Kelly has done a lot in creating the minefield he has to navigate daily.

After finishing last season with a four-game winning streak and a lopsided bowl victory over one-time-rival Miami in the Sun Bowl, a lot was expected of the 2011 Fighting Irish.
