#11 Syracuse Orange: College Basketball 111 in 111

syracuse-orange

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

With the disappointing outcome of Friday night’s expected aircraft carrier games, the Syracuse Orange are hoping for better luck Sunday when they take on San Diego State on the deck of the USS Midway.  The game has already been postponed from its original tip date of Friday and if the conditions hold, should be the start of another season (and their last season since they move to the ACC next year) in which Jim Boeheim has ‘Cuse competing for a Big East title.

Syracuse officially leaving Big East for ACC in 2013

syracuse big east tournament

We all knew this was coming for some time, but the news was made official today:

The BIG EAST Conference and Syracuse University today announced that both organizations have reached an agreement on Syracuse’s departure from the BIG EAST and move to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).  Under the terms of the agreement reached between the BIG EAST and Syracuse, the BIG EAST members will vote, in accordance with the BIG EAST’s bylaws, to terminate Syracuse’s membership in the BIG EAST effective July 1, 2013, at which point Syracuse will join the ACC. In addition to other consideration, Syracuse will make a total cash payment to the BIG EAST of $7.5 million.

#71 Syracuse Orange: College Football 77 in 77

syracuse-orange

Given what a college basketball powerhouse you have in the Syracuse Orange, you easily forget the history of college football surrounding the SU program. Jim Brown, Ernie Davis the first black Heisman Trophy winner, I suggest you Netflix “The Express,” to edify yourself on what the program once was.

What it is today is far less impressive. The Orange won 8 games in 2010, including a bowl, and got off to a 5-2 start in 2011. However, they lost 5 in a row to finish below .500 overall and a terrible 1-6 in Big East play. I’d say .500 might be a pipe dream again this year, as their offense just doesn’t really make plays.

#1 Syracuse vs. #4 Wisconsin: everything you need to know

Jordan Taylor Ben Brust

For the first time in program history, the Wisconsin Badgers are making back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances.  In typical fashion, most critics were underestimating UW’s chances of advancing past the first weekend but Bo Ryan has done it again.  The Badgers will match up with top seed Syracuse Thursday night in an East Regional game in Boston.  Many were hopping off the Orange bandwagon after Fab Melo was suspended for the NCAA Tournament, but ‘Cuse avoided upset bids in the opening weekend to keep their dancing shoes shined.

Cincinnati Bearcats basketball now trending worldwide

cincinnati bearcats cheerleaders

Yancy Gates and Mick Cronin are now both among the top ten trending terms on Twitter in the United States. And you’re probably wondering who they are.

As are many people in the world, because the Cincinnati Bearcats star player, and head coach are now picking up the steam all over the world wide web. Today, southern Ohio, tomorrow the globe.

The Bearcats ticket to the dance had already been punched, but this huge win over the Syracuse Orange 71-68, quite possibly the tourney’s #2 overall seed, just solidifies their seeding and placement further.

Back to the Q rating, you may have heard of Gates, but for an infamous reason.

Bernie Fine Accusers Admits He Lied, Fabricated Charges

bernie_fine

One of the four men accusing former Syracuse Assistant Coach Bernie Fine of sexual assault, made a major retraction yesterday. He admitted he was 100% lying and that Fine never actually molested him.

Fine was Jim Boeheim’s right hand man for decades at Syracuse University until the sexual abuse claims surfaced and the school fired Fine.

Accuser and current prison inmate Floyd VanHooser wrote a letter where said he lied to both police and in his December interviews with The Associated Press and to The Post-Standard newspaper of Syracuse.

Fine helped raise the 56-year-old VanHooser after his parents died.

Analyzing all 9 Undefeated College Basketball Teams

syracuse-orange

Nine undefeated teams left in all of college basketball. And none of them are named Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Duke (I listed them twice because ESPN loves them so much), Ohio State, Florida or Kansas.

In other words, if you’re still undefeated at this point of this season, you are legit- at least to some extent. By mid December, pretty much everyone has played in a conference “challenge” event and participated in a Holiday tournament. if you didn’t pick up an L in either of those situations, then you likely suffered a setback in some quality opponent non-conference scheduling.

Yes, most of the games up to this point have been cupcakes, but no one has really been able to feed on just  cupcakes for over a month. Let’s run through the 9 remaining perfect teams, in order of AP poll ranking.

Should Syracuse Fire Jim Boeheim? 37% of Americans Agree

boeheim

A new poll released from Poll Position found that 37% of Americans think Syracuse Orange college basketball coach Jim Boeheim should be fired for his disparaging remarks he initially made against the young men accusing his long time assistant Bernie Fine of sexually abusing them.

Syracuse Investigation Progresses: Feds Search Bernie Fine’s Office

Lately, my daily work schedule has included the following additions to my “to do list.”

-Check latest headlines on child rape case surrounding premier college football program.

-Write/publish reaction post on Penn State.

-Check latest headlines on child molestation case surrounding premier college basketball program.

-Write/publish reaction post on Syracuse.

Sounds about as gloomy as the projected earnings of the American automotive industry.

Syracuse did the right thing in firing long time college basketball Bernie Fine. His number of accusers is up to four, and there’s the whole “smoking gun” of sorts with the taped conversation of his wife describing what she knew about his alleged child molesting.

Syracuse Chancellor Gives Jim Boeheim Vote of Confidence

boeheim

Syracuse Orange Coach Jim Boeheim has been pretty quiet on the child molestation charges against his now fired right man of multiple decades Bernie Fine. On Sunday he backed off a little from the acrimonious comments he initially made against Fine’s accusers. On Monday he said nothing at all, and probably realizes that in this case talking media equals “less is more.”

Syracuse University Chancellor Nancy Cantor answered the big question today surrounding the college basketball program.

Silence of Jim Boeheim Speaks Volumes About Him, Syracuse

Syracuse-basketball

What happens on the court this year for Syracuse college basketball is really trivial and trite compared to what’s going on for the Orange off of it. Anyone who isn’t mentally slow or a boring, two-dimensional stick figure is aware that Jim Boeheim has much more important things to deal with right now than hoops. Bringing justice against the molesting of children, which occurred within his program and during his regime is a million times more important than anything a scoreboard or the Big East standings have to say this year.

Unlike Penn State, Syracuse University has handled the situation and damage control reasonably well.

Except for Boeheim of course, who looks like an egomaniacal loose cannon after he attacked the alleged victims, accusing them of lying/opportunism. That’s why he needs to calculate his next public move very carefully. Hence the silence yesterday.
