VIDEO: Chris Kluwe calls out Vikings on MSNBC

Former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe is one of the most outspoken players in the history of the NFL. The avid marriage equality and gay rights advocate has as much a social conscience as anyone to ever play the game. From gun control to civil rights, Kluwe is somebody who almost always has something meaningful to say.

Mark Cuban’s NBA Lockout Mouthpiece: Colbert SUPER Pac?

It’s about time we had some non-dreary and depressing NBA lockout news. Actually this is fun, comedic lockout news.

NBA Commissioner David Stern issued a gag order on the labor situation. As you know, Michael Jordan broke that rule and was fined $100,000. The gag order prohibits Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban publicly discussing any aspect of the NBA labor situation.

However, unaffiliated third parties can say whatever they want. And an “anonymous donor” inspired Stephen Colbert to release an ad detailing a solution to the league labor crisis on the Colbert Report. While we can’t say whether that anonymous donor is or isn’t Cuban, the video (which you can watch after the jump) tells us to draw a straight line to the owner of the Blog Maverick URL.

Iowa TV Station Incites Stephen Colbert’s Wrath on Eve of Straw Poll (Video)

If there’s one thing I love to watch- it’s a good all media smackdown. And there’s a reason Stephen Colbert is probably my favorite show on television next to Family Guy. And with the Iowa straw poll set to take place this weekend. The nation is focusing on the midwest. And please no more comments about the deep fried butter on a stick at the Iowa State Fair! That joke is played out!

STEPHEN COLBERT’s Northwestern Commencement Speech (Video)

On the 25th anniversary of his own commencement,  NU alum Stephen Colbert came to college football venue Ryan Field to be the guest speaker at NU’s 153rd graduation ceremony. The entire lower section of the West Stands were packed to hear the outrageous political pundit on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” give his speech.

It was a beautiful sunny morning, and Stephen Colbert absolutely knocked his approximately 25 minute speech out of the park. He mixed hilarity with insight, and comedy with inspiration.

Today witnessed the most memorable event to happen at Northwestern’s football field since the 1995 Big Ten Champion team made their run to the Rose Bowl.

Stephen Colbert had so many great one-liners, it was easy to see why Rolling Stone named him one-half of “America’s Anchor Team” in their cover story by Maureen Dowd a few years ago. (Jon Stewart is the other half obviously)

A 1986 graduate of Northwestern’s School of Communication, Stephen Colbert is host and executive producer of the multiple Emmy and Peabody Award winning series, touted by The New York Times as “one of the best television shows of the year.” At Northwestern, Stephen Colbert was planning a serious acting career when he fell in love with comedic improv. Only two years out of college, he ended up with the Second City touring company.

Sidetracked: Tucker Trains Stephen Colbert

By: Melissa S. Wollering

When Stephen Colbert stepped up to sponsor the U.S. Olympic Speedskating Team, he went all-in.  First, he (with the help of fans) dished out $300,000 to cover what Dutch Bank DSB wouldn’t.  Then, he challenged Shani Davis to a skate-off, after Davis allegedly called him a jerk.  When Davis accepted, Colbert decided he needed a teacher.  Not just any teacher—the world’s best.

Enter Wisconsin native and Team USA’s Tucker Fredricks.  We introduced you to the Janesville resident several months ago in this TSB feature. Not only did Tucker teach Comedy Central’s gem to skate on The Colbert Report, but this month’s segment took on a life all its own, landing everyone—including Tucker’s mom—on national television.

“It was a really funny skit,” says Fredricks.  “It was a blast, and he is a really funny guy.” [Read more…]

Yep, these are our Readers

By Paul M. Banks

I’ve gotten my news from the Daily Show and Colbert Report for a quite a few years now. Given how pathetic cable news is (CNN sucks, Fox is blatantly a conservative PR firm and MSNBC is trying to do the same thing the opposite way, but with less balls) and how local network news is SO AWFUL it makes the cable news business look closer to respectability, Comedy Central is the place to go. And their sports news is getting better too, especially with these two vids. This is just hysterical, the Clash between Philly and New York to see who has the douchiest fans. Love Jason Jones’ Michael Irvin style suit and the concept of parodying an on-site sports pregame show in general. Watch the douche-off between New York and Philly fans, you will want to watch it again and again.

Obviously, these people are NOT our readers, I doubt they know how to read.

The second video is Bill Simmons’ recent appearance on the Colbert Report, where he was plugging his new tome, “The Book of Basketball.” He made the bold statement that basketball is where we are now as a culture, and that “baseball is the new golf” and now only for everyone over 50. I’m not saying he’s right, but if he is it would be good for The Sports Bank, as we do our best numbers BY FAR in hoops content. I always get compliments on my TSB business card, because the orange at the top and the surface prompts people to tell me that “it feels like a basketball.” Not intentional, but a good marketing ploy now nonetheless.

Since b-ball does best here, perhaps it’s a little validation of Simmons’ theory. I admit football is my favorite sport, but college basketball may be my 1a. And as MLB has joined the NFL in being Draconian in their media access policies, and Stalinesque about controlling the message that gets out, the NBA is all the more warm and welcoming, And that goes a LONG WAY in determining my favorite game.

And the best test for what league you like the most is how many out-of-market games you’ll watch on television. And when I don’t have a dog in the fight, I’m a million times more likely to watch b-ball than baseball. And the NBA is much more fun to watch on TV than MLB in general. And with the way population demographics are shifting, The Sports Guy could be right, and emphasizing hoops is right for Sports Bank. Yup, these are our readers.
