Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Giving Johnny Dawkins a two-year contract extension was a vote of confidence that the former Dukie has the Stanford Cardinal basketball program heading in the right direction.  Dawkins has recruited well since arriving in Palo Alto but his team is still a year or two away from being a true contender in the Pac-12.

Following last week’s two-game series announcement with Notre Dame, Northwestern University A.D. Jim Phillips announced today a four-game college football series with Stanford. The Wildcats and Cardinal will play their first game in 2019. Yes, that’s how long in advance these things are planned.

Northwestern and Stanford have played six times previously, with the last meeting in 1994, a 41-41 tie with the then-No. 24-ranked Cardinal in Evanston.

Projected #1 NFL Draft Pick, QB Andrew Luck Returning to Stanford!

Sometimes you hear a news story, and all you can think “what on Earth are they thinking?” Today the worlds of college football, the NFL Draft and actually the NFL itself witnessed their version of actress Shelly Long leaving the uber-popular 80s sitcom “Cheers.” I can’t think of similar precedent in the world of sports, so I had to use the entertainment world here.

But yes, you read that correctly, Stanford QB Andrew Luck, the slam dunk choice as the #1 overall pick by the Carolina Panthers.  is coming back to “The Farm” for his senior season.

Stanford QB Andrew Luck: Your 2011 NFL #1 Pick?

It’s hard to decide what’s better about Stanford Quarterback Andrew Luck as a NFL prospect, possibly the #1 NFL Draft prospect,- his strong arm, excellent read-and-recognitions, quickness and mobility, poise and intelligence on the field or his excellent standing off of it.

In preparation for his match-up with Luck and his Stanford teammates this week, Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly discussed what impresses him most about the redshirt quarterback.

“He was hitting the wide field, go route, intermediate, and the thing that really got my attention is his ability to run. I think he had a 50 something yard run for a touchdown. So his ability, his escapability, I didn’t know what it was. I now know what it is. The guy is extremely athletic, as well, and he can run. So he brings a big dimension to the table and not just throwing the football,” Kelly said.

99 in 99: #84 Stanford Cardinal

Stanford tree

My all-time favorite Sportscenter commercial is the one where John Anderson throws a piece of paper into the garbage as the Stanford Cardinal mascot is watching.  Anderson looks at the big oafy tree, then picks the paper out of the trash and puts it in the recycling bin.  Get me every time.

What does this have to do with my Stanford basketball preview?  Nothing.  I just figured it is a good way to change my lead-in.  The Sports Bank’s “99 in 99” runs down the 72 college basketball power conference teams and top 27 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  Click here if you missed teams #84-#99.
