Don’t expect Tim Duncan to leave San Antonio Spurs this off-season

Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker

With smart drafting, wise acquisitions, and the genius puppetmaster Gregg Popovich pulling the strings; the San Antonio Spurs’ dynasty of being NBA title contenders continued this past season.  They face one major objection this summer; re-sign Tim Duncan.

Applying the Allan Houston Rule to the NBA Southwest Division Teams in 2011

allan houston

One of the topics expected to be discussed during the NBA Lockout is the possible revival of The Allan Houston Rule.  When a new CBA was agreed upon in 2005, it allowed NBA teams a one time opportunity to waive a player and not have his contract count against the luxury tax teams have to pay if their team salary exceeds a pre-determined amount set by the league.  The released player becomes a free agent but his salary still gets paid and counts against his former team’s salary cap.  Ironically enough, Allan Houston was not a victim of The Allan Houston.  The Knicks instead decided to waive Jerome Williams.

If the new CBA once again invokes this clause, most teams will probably take advantage since it would save them possibly tens of millions of dollars.  To keep up with the times, we will change the name of this from “The Allan Houston Rule” to the “Rashard Arenas Rule” since Rashard Lewis and Gilbert Arenas easily have the two worst contracts in the league.  Allow me to break down each team and who would end up being the casualties of this rule.  Here is the Southwest Division.

Is the Window Closing on the San Antonio Spurs?

Like we are currently seeing in the NFL, the 2011 NBA off-season is up in the air with a lockout looming.  Free agency could be delayed and completely restructured depending on the new agreement reached by the owners and players.  Still, The Sports Bank continues to break down all thirty NBA teams to see what areas they need to address in the off-season.

After the San Antonio Spurs were upset by the Memphis Grizzlies in the opening round of the playoffs, Tony Parker implied the window has closed on the Spurs being a championship contender.  Parker quickly back-pedaled saying that was not what he meant, but the Spurs are dangerously close to being over the hill.  A few off-season moves could help keep that window open for another season.

Is Time Running Out on the San Antonio Spurs?

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs dynasty just continues to chug along.  However, it appears as if the train seems to be run losing fuel.  Their nucleus of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli, and Tony Parker is starting to get up their age but if that core is healthy during the post-season, the Spurs are more than capable of once again making a run in the NBA Western Conference.

All good things must come to an end.  TV fans learned that recently with the series finales of both Lost and 24.  Maybe it is finally time the Spurs follow this theory and start blowing up their aging roster.

NBA Power Rankings: #5 San Antonio Spurs

Spurs Basketball

By: David Kay

In a critical off-season for the Spurs franchise, San Antonio made all the right moves to make sure their recent run of success did not come to a sreetching hault this season.  They should once again be one of the elite teams in the Western Conference and compete for another NBA ring.

2008-09 Season Summary:
The Spurs played up to par last season but it was obvious that their run under the Duncan/Parker/Ginobili era is close to coming to an end. San Antonio won 54 games and took the Southwest Division title but lost for the first time in the opening round of the play-offs since 2000. Duncan’s dominance began to fade and without Ginobili in the post season it was apparent Parker can’t be the number one scoring option on a team that will be a title contender. Roger Mason stepped up to be one of the bright spots of the season as a reliable clutch situation shooter.
