Michigan St. Wins 20+ in 2 years; Not bad for a “Basketball School”

On the banks of the Red Cedar there’s a school that’s known to sports fans.

Their specialty is college basketball, and the Spartans also play great hockey. Excuse me for taking the Michigan State fight song, and changing the lyrics. But when people think about MSU sports, Tom Izzo’s hoops program comes to mind first. Six Final Fours in 11 years will do that.

Spartan football was a national powerhouse in the 1960s; and since then MSU has produced a Rose Bowl in 1988, some great wide receivers, and not much else. However, there is a very rich football history in East Lansing beyond that. Legendary leader Duffy Daugherty led the Spartans to four national titles during the 1950s.

And this year’s Spartans, led by senior QB Kirk Cousins could tie the school record for wins with a win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game, and then break it with a win over Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Michigan State #7 in 1st BCS Rankings of 2010

Michigan State isn’t known for just basketball anymore. The football team at the hoops haven is really making a name for itself.

State is off to their first 7-0 start since the national championship year of 1966. The first BCS standings of the college football season came Sunday night, and since MSU is the only undefeated Big Ten team left, they lead the way among conference representation at #7.

The top five consists of Oklahoma, Oregon, Boise St, Auburn, and TCU. Other Big Ten teams in the top 25 include #10 Ohio State, #13 Wisconsin, #15 Iowa and (sort of) #16 Nebraska.

Undefeated Michigan State Football: Not Bad for a “Basketball School”

Excuse me for taking the Michigan State fight song, and changing the lyrics. But when people think about MSU sports, Tom Izzo’s hoops program comes to mind first. Six Final Fours in 11 years will do that.

But after beating a very game Illinois team, another school known for hardwood over the gridiron, The Spartans are 7-0 for the first time since 1966, when they won their first nine before tying Notre Dame 10-10 in one of college football‘s most iconic games.

Since then Spartan football has produced a Rose Bowl in 1988, some great wide receivers, and not much else. There is a very rich football history in East Lansing however. Legendary leader Duffy Daugherty led the Spartans to four national titles during the 1950s.

And this year’s Spartans, led by junior QB Kirk Cousins is possibly the greatest MSU team in a generation.
