Missouri cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Despite losing five key contributors from last year’s very thin team, the Missouri Tigers should still be a threat in their inaugural season in the SEC thanks to the addition of four transfers and return of Laurence Bowers from injury.

The Florida Gators season tipped off Friday evening… sorta.  Their much anticipated aircraft carrier game versus Georgetown was cancelled after the first half due to condensation on the court.

Despite finishing in a second place tie in the SEC last year, the Tennessee Volunteers missed out on the NCAA Tournament because of their struggles during the non-conference portion of their schedule.  With only one starter gone from that squad, even bigger things are expected this year from the Vols.

The Alabama Crimson Tide suffered through their share of ups and downs last season before being a one-and-done in the NCAA Tournament.  Despite having a young, thin roster, Anthony Grant should have ‘Bama in the upper half of the SEC standings and back in the Big Dance.

Mike Anderson’s return didn’t yield the immediate results that many were hoping for last season.  The Arkansas Razorbacks are still a young squad with no seniors on the roster but should make strides this year.

Mediocrity can only last so long for a college basketball coach.  Andy Kennedy is entering his seventh year as Ole Miss Rebels’ head coach and while he has led the team to five NIT appearances, a trip to the NCAA Tournament still escapes his resume.  This year will likely be a repeat performance.

The Texas A&M Aggies were supposed to contend for a conference title in their final year in the Big 12.  Instead, A&M finished as one of the most disappointing teams in the country.  It is hard to imagine how they can turn things around as they begin their maiden voyage as members of the SEC.

How the South Carolina Gamecocks lured Frank Martin away from Kansas State is still one of the great mysteries of this college basketball off-season.  Martin will certainly have his work cut out for him since the Gamecocks lost three starters from last year’s team that finished dead last in the SEC.

A year after making the NCAA Tournament, the Georgia Bulldogs took a step back in Mark Fox’s third season in Athens.  The outlook isn’t much better this season for the Dawgs who lack any real firepower on the offensive end.
