College Basketball 111 in 111: #106 Auburn Tigers

auburn dance team

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Coming in at #109 in our “111 in 111” is the Auburn Tigers who enter the second season of their re-building project under head coach Tony Barbee.

99 in 99:#11 Kentucky Wildcats

ashley judd

John Calipari was hired away from Memphis to put the Kentucky Wildcats back on the national map.  In just one season in Lexington, Calipari has done that that and so much more.

The Wildcats lose eight players from last year’s team including five that were selected in the first round of the NBA Draft.  In what seems like it will become a yearly cycle at UK, the program brings in the top recruiting class in the country and could very easily be a Final Four contender.

99 in 99: #22 Tennessee Volunteers

If you had Bruce Pearl in the “Which shady college coach would be the next to get busted for a major recruiting violation” pool, congratulations.  Pearl put the Tennessee Volunteer program in a troubling situation but if the team can not let that affect the product on the floor, the Vols should be a contender in the SEC.

99 in 99: #29 Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia Bulldogs Cheerleaders

Georgia is the sexy sleeper that really is not a sleeper anymore because everyone is picking them to be a sleeper this season.  I hope that sentence makes sense.  The Bulldogs are on the rise under second year head coach Mark Fox and will be a feisty team in the loaded SEC East.

99 in 99: #35 Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt basketball

I have Vanderbilt ranked fifth out of the six SEC East teams.  That is not as much a slight to Vandy as it is a testament to how tough that division will be this season.

99 in 99: #40 Mississippi State Bulldogs

mississippi state basketball

It has been an eventful off-season at Mississippi State… and that is not a good thing.  The Bulldogs will deal with early season suspensions to their top two players but should be an NCAA Tournament-caliber team once they are at full strength.
