Wisconsin Badgers Head Coach Bo Ryan Blasts NCAA Transfer Rule

Under NCAA rules, a college athlete who receives his undergraduate degree but still has a year of eligibility remaining can transfer to another school and play right away rather than sit out a year which other transfers must do.  This exception became a focal point in the national media when St. Joseph’s would not release center Todd O’Brien from his scholarship so that he could pursue his graduate degree and play out his final year of eligibility at UAB.

Big Ten teams Michigan State and Illinois have benefited from this rule this season.  The Spartans starting shooting guard Brandon Wood transferred in from Valparaiso under these guidelines, so did Illini point guard Sam Maniscalco who left Bradley and provided Bruce Weber with a much needed, experienced floor leader.

Wisconsin Badgers head coach Bo Ryan is vehemently against this rule though.  He had quite the rant on the topic when speaking to the media on Monday, describing it as “a terrible rule” and “one of the worst rules I’ve ever seen.”

Russell Wilson Gives Badgers New Dimension to Already Powerful Offense

Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week following his league debut with the Badgers, in which he completed 10 of 13 passes for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running for 62 yards and another score- an exciting 46 yard scramble.

The North Carolina State transfer (where he was all ACC second team) became just the second UW quarterback to throw for 250 yards and rush for at least 50 yards in the same game — and the first Badgers signal caller to do so since 1979.

Wisconsin Seems Ready for Russell-Mania, But Is Russell Wilson Ready?

Madison, Wisconsin
(a.k.a, the home of the Wisconsin Badgers) has exploded with a hysteria known only as Russell-Mania because of the addition of highly-touted NC State transfer and dual-threat quarterback Russell Wilson.

Head Coach Bret Bielema even went as far to mention how he’s approached at the gas pump and asked whether the kid Wilson can play. There hasn’t been this much excitement around one single player since Ron Dayne took home the Heisman Trophy in 1999.

During the Badgers Media Day, I had a chance to catch up with Wilson and ask him about his first impressions of Madison and his feelings regarding Wisconsin’s playbook and the offense. [Read more…]

Russell Wilson to Wisconsin Still Possible?

According to sources close to the University of Wisconsin, former NC State quarterback Russell Wilson will make a campus visit sometime next week.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that Wilson, who threw for 3,663 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, visited the Auburn campus. Rumors swirled that Wilson was impressed by his visit to Auburn, making the Tigers the front-runners for the senior signal-caller.

Could the tide have changed as Wilson most likely makes his visit to Madison on Wednesday?
