#43 Purdue Boilermakers: College Basketball 111 in 111

purdue basketball

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore played such an enormous role in the Purdue Boilermakers success last season that replacing their production will be a huge challenge for Matt Painter, who nearly bolted for Missouri this off-season.  The return of Robbie Hummel will certainly help, but does Purdue have enough pieces around the returning senior?

99 in 99: #19 Purdue Boilermakers

robbie hummel

With news of Robbie Hummel’s second torn ACL in an eight-month period, the Purdue Boilermakers dropped from second in my rankings to 19th.  Is that too drastic on my part?  When you consider the strength at the top of the Big Ten with teams like Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinois, and Wisconsin; I do not think so.

The Sports Bank’s “99 in 99” ranks the 72 power conference college basketball programs and top 27 mid-majors.  Click here if you missed teams #20-#99.

Purdue’s Robbie Hummel OUT FOR SEASON

HUMMEL_INJURED

It appears that the curse bedeviling Purdue’s football team has now carried over to basketball. This is just ridiculous for the Boilermakers.

They lost their starting QB, tailback and the best WR in the Big Ten for the season. Now they lost their best and most important player in basketball, coincidentally a year after they lost him down the stretch of what could have been a very a special season. I turn to Twitter:
BTNMikeHall Mike Hall by ThePaintCrew

I cant believe this RT @BTNBrentsBlog:Purdues Robbie Hummel will miss the 2010-11 season after tearing his ACL on Saturday.

and later this tweet from the Purdue student section, which accurately sums it up:

ThePaintCrew F*** this, this is not fair

Agreed, it’s not fair. This is Hummel’s third major injury in four years, my heart bleeds for you guys.

College Hoops 101

By: David Kay

College Hoops 101 is a weekly article centering around all things college basketball.  I  look back at the previous week, glance forward to what is ahead in the up-coming days, and keep track of how many games I have watched this season in hopes of topping my mark from a year ago (274.)

In this week’s edition ‘Cuse is the new #1, Purdue suffers a huge loss, it’s bubble watch week, and is Notre Dame better without Luke Harangody?
