#36 Purdue Boilermakers: College Basketball 111 in 111

purdue-basketball

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

With three of their top four scorers gone from last year, the Purdue Boilermakers are in a bit of a transition year.  In typical Matt Painter fashion though, he will get the most of out his roster and have the Boilers back in the NCAA Tournament.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore played such an enormous role in the Purdue Boilermakers success last season that replacing their production will be a huge challenge for Matt Painter, who nearly bolted for Missouri this off-season.  The return of Robbie Hummel will certainly help, but does Purdue have enough pieces around the returning senior?

Big Ten Basketball News and Notes: Purdue Schedule, NU Staff Promotion

The Purdue Boilermakers will open the college basketball season on Nov. 11 when they host Northern Illinois in the first of two rededication games in conjunction with Mackey Celebration Weekend. The game will mark the official celebration of the three-year, $99.5 million renovation that represents the most comprehensive and significant facility undertaking in the University’s athletics history.

After hosting High Point on Nov. 14, the Boilermakers will travel to San Juan for their first-ever appearance in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

The field for the 2011 edition of the tournament consists of Alabama, Colorado, Iona, Maryland, Temple, Western Michigan and Wichita State, in addition to the Boilermakers. That group combined for a .687 winning percentage last season, while Purdue and Temple reached the NCAA Tournament, Wichita State defeated Alabama for the NIT title and Colorado reached the NIT semifinals.

99 in 99: #19 Purdue Boilermakers

robbie hummel

With news of Robbie Hummel’s second torn ACL in an eight-month period, the Purdue Boilermakers dropped from second in my rankings to 19th.  Is that too drastic on my part?  When you consider the strength at the top of the Big Ten with teams like Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinois, and Wisconsin; I do not think so.

The Sports Bank’s “99 in 99” ranks the 72 power conference college basketball programs and top 27 mid-majors.  Click here if you missed teams #20-#99.
