The Oklahoma State Cowboys showed they are going to be a team to reckon with this season by demolishing N.C. State in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.  As a result, their two star players did wonders for their 2013 NBA Draft stock.  Here is a look at which players helped or hurt the draft stock in Puerto Rico.

#102 Penn State Nittany Lions: College Basketball 111 in 111

penn state basketball

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

While the football program has been at the center of the national media surrounding the Jerry Sandusky scandal and cover up, the Penn State Nittany Lions basketball program remains in the shadows at not-so Happy Valley.  A year after making the NCAA Tournament, PSU returned to their normal home; the cellar of the Big Ten.  Don’t expect much to change this year either.

Losing your 2009-10 leading scorer, your best overall defender, and then right before the season your team’s most explosive scorer sounds like a lot to deal with for a program.

Apparently it’s not.  [Read more…]

Purdue to Play in Puerto Rico, Signs Frontcourt Duo

cheerleader

“Once you go Rican, you never go seekin.” At least that’s what they say. All I know is I wouldn’t likely seek Jennifer Lopez. But the Purdue Boilermakers, expected to be a major player this year in the Big Ten, and possibly in national college basketball as well, is one of seven teams that has committed to participating in the 2011 Honda Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The fifth-annual event is slated for Nov. 17, 18 and 20 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in the cosmopolitan Hato Rey district of San Juan.

In addition to the Boilermakers, the 2011 field includes Alabama, Colorado, Iona, Maryland, Temple and Wichita State. A final team to complete the eight-team tournament will be announced at a later date.

99 in 99: #8 North Carolina Tar Heels

North Carolina cheerleaders

The North Carolina Tar Heels were once again playing for a championship in April.  Unfortunately, it was the NIT title.  UNC is coming off a very uncharacteristic season in which they missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time under Roy Williams.  The Heels will be a young team this season but do add the top freshman in the country, Harrison Barnes.

99 in 99: #35 Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt basketball

I have Vanderbilt ranked fifth out of the six SEC East teams.  That is not as much a slight to Vandy as it is a testament to how tough that division will be this season.

The Sports Bank’s 99 team college basketball preview in 99 days ranks the 72 power conference teams and top 27 mid-major programs.  Click here if you missed teams #36-#99.
