Islanders Look To Make Another Statement

John Tavares

It’s almost Thanksgiving, which means it’s November and that the New York Islanders should be in the midst of some sort of record-setting losing streak. Well thanks to the additions of Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy on October fourth, plus the recently stellar play of goaltender Jaroslav Halak and secondary scoring that has been there all season, the Islanders are playing like the best team in all of New York.

Chicago Blackhawks: What to expect going forward

Patrick Sharp

Thank God the Chicago Blackhawks and NHL are back. The lackluster Winter Olympics hockey tournament will give way to what really matters: the push towards the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Blackhawks are in very good position to make another run at the Cup, but there are a few things to take note of prior to the postseason.

The Hawks head to the Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers in an Original Six matchup Thursday evening. The game will be Chicago’s first game since breaking for the Olympics. The one thing to watch for in this game is how well the 10 Chicago Blackhawks who went to Sochi look back on North American soil. The Rangers will be without Olympian winger Mats Zuccarello because of a hand injury he sustained in Russia. [Read more…]

NHL: shortened season, big expectations

stanley-cup

The hockey lockout is finally over. The teams are back and ready for a season even if it is shortened. The big question is, who will come out on top and who will fall flat? Well, here are some predictions.

The TOP Two Contenders for the Cup:

The Los Angeles Kings: It is tough for teams to have a repeat win in the Stanly Cup Finals. No team has been able to do it since the Detroit Red Wings in 1998. However, The Kings have a chance. They haven’t changed their team dramatically, keeping the players that had big impacts in the team’s first win.

The New York Rangers: The New York Rangers picked up Rick Nash from Columbus during the off season. On a real team, Rick Nash will be an explosive player making 30 to 40 goals. The team’s defense will also be a big factor. The Rangers usually have a solid defense and it should continue through this season.

Fighting in the NHL playoffs on the rise

Flyers and Penguins

I don’t know too much about the NHL and hardly pay attention to it all season, even the playoffs.

This year is different though. [Read more…]

With Duncan Keith suspended, Blackhawks positive momentum gone?

duncan keith

The Chicago Blackhawks have been the National Hockey League’s (NHL’s) second hottest team, behind only the scintillatingly-hot Pittsburgh Penguins who have sported a 13-0-1 record recently.  The Blackhawks have blistered their way up the NHL’s Western Conference standings at an 8-1-1 clip, including a recent 5-0-0 run, all of this being done without the services of their captain and leader Jonathan Toews, who has missed the past 14 games with a concussion.

In spite of this devastating loss, the Blackhawks are only one point out of the Western Conference’s 4th position.

Thursday’s Three Stars: Saad Shines But Staal and Penguins Get Last Laugh

The Chicago Blackhawks skated into Pittsburgh on Thursday night looking to end a streak of seven consecutive road preseason losses, but unfortunately for them, Jordan Staal and the Penguins had other ideas. Staal scored twice, and Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy also added goals as the Pens pulled away late and beat the Hawks 4-1. Michael Frolik picked up the lone tally for the Blackhawks in the second period, and Ray Emery gave up four goals on 19 shots in a losing effort.

Blackhawks Notes: Storylines Heading Into First Preseason Game

The Chicago Blackhawks are headed to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for their first preseason game tomorrow night, where they will play the Edmonton Oilers. The game, while not available on TV in Chicago, is going to be streaming on the Hawks’ official team website, and it will provide fans’ first glimpse into some of the changes that the team has made this off-season.

Big name players like Marian Hossa (who is finally reporting to camp tomorrow after attending Pavol Demitra’s funeral last week, as well as attending the birth of his daughter), Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Patrick Kane will not be making the trip up to Canada, but there is still plenty to pay attention to as the team suits up against an actual opponent for the first time since April:
