Does Wisconsin Stand a Chance vs. Stanford?

With Wisconsin’s Big Ten Championship win over Nebraska, the loser to Stanford in the Rose Bowl has been determined. Okay, just a small joke touching on the weakness of the Big Ten conference this season, but, does Wisconsin stand a chance against Stanford in Pasadena on January 1st? If they play like the team that just completely obliterated Nebraska 70-31, you bet!

Going into yesterday night, I would have told you Wisconsin would lose something like…24-17. I was not convinced Nebraska was as good as their 10-2 record indicated, but I fully thought the Huskers would smell the Roses after yesterday night. However, Wisconsin looked like anything but a team that went 7-5 in the regular season and finished third in the leaders division.

Stanford has a tendency of shutting down good offenses. Such as holding Oregon to only 14 points, along with then no.2 ranked Southern Cal when the Cardinal beat them in week three 21-14. Wisconsin’s one-dimensional offense will have a hard time with the tough Stanford defense.

The 11-2 Cardinal is the toughest opponent Wisconsin will play this season, and if Wisconsin does not want to make their third straight Rose Bowl appearance a third straight loss, they have to develop a passing game. I would not anticipate Stanford letting Bucky get away with only passing the ball 8 times in a game, but after what we saw yesterday, who really knows? If Wisconsin is as unstoppable on the ground in four weeks as they were yesterday, they won’t need a passing game.

I was ready to crown Stanford Rose Bowl Champs regardless of which team won yesterday. However, with Wisconsin’s outstanding performance over the Huskers yesterday, I have a new found hope that if a similar looking Badger team shows up in Pasadena, it could be the right recipe for a Big Ten, Pac 12 Rose Bowl classic!

#53 UCLA Bruins: College Football 77 in 77

Did UCLA make a splash hire with Jim Mora Jr. as their new coach? Or is it just going to be more malaise carrying over from the Rick Neuheisel era? He didn’t leave the cupboard empty; he recruited quite well, but just didn’t do anything with it. UCLA is certainly a college basketball school, and “basketball on grass” is certainly not a style of college football played in Westwood.

They’ve tossed just 27 TD passes the past two years, everyone else in the pass happy Pac-12 has thrown at least 33.

Illini Win Over #18 Arizona State Feels Like Champaign Campaign

illini_cheerleader

With Illinois defeating the #18 Arizona State Sun Devils 17-14 tonight; and getting off to their first 3-0 start since 2001, it’s starting to feel quite a bit like that year. It was Illinois’ most recent Big Ten title season, but that’s not why it feels that way. The Fighting Illini have a long way to go to reach that Champaign Campaign plateau.

However, there are a few similarities. Start with our national day of remembrance last week for the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Throw in the 3-0 start coincidence, and the last win over a Pac-10 team coming in the ’01 season opener (at California 44-17), and it’s reminiscent a bit.

But the 2001 game this matches up with is the shootout win over a ranked Louisville team and Chris Redman. Both were early non-conference, first real test and the Illini pass with flying colors.

Don’t Sleep on the Arizona State Sun Devils this College Football Season

One college football team likely to enter the national rankings this week is the Arizona State Sun Devils. Who announced their presence with authority Friday night in an exciting overtime victory over #21 Missouri. It was a spirited home night game as the team showed off their new intimidating black uniforms and helmets.

No more cartoonish logo, their “all in” with intimidation and a fresh new look. See their “Fear the Fork” marketing campaign. The fans were instructed to dress in all black too. ESPN (likely mistakenly) showed some fans in black face paint. (I guess they were going for the Al Jolson look?). And black in the summertime in the desert? Well, it was a night game.

#3 Stanford Cardinal: College Football 77 in 77

It was a huge offseason down on The Farm. Coach Jim Harbaugh left for the San Francisco 49ers and their star player very unexpectedly returned. Why did Stanford Cardinal superstar QB Andrew Luck pass up the guaranteed glory and millions of dollars that comes with being the #1 pick in the NFL Draft to return to school and work more on his architecture degree?

Only the most inside of insiders in Palo Alto and the Luck family truly know the answer to that. Why did Harbaugh leave for the NFL now instead of waiting a year to leave with Luck? It all adds up to a year that has a lot of transition and familiarity at the same. And this paradox could equal a conference title and perhaps something bigger?

“It looks like heaven’s easier to get into than Arizona State,” said Ned Flanders in one of The Simpsons’ greatest lines. But I kid ASU, I kid the educational standards. We’re not here to discuss that; or the armies of ridiculous hotties that attend this party school of party schools. Hey, there’s a reason Tosh.O picked Tempe for the campus invasion. You can see from the cheerleader pics in this post, or the video here where all the hotties brutally make fun of the 90 year-old-man who invaded their tailgate, that the ASU ladies are as scorching as the July high temperatures on campus.

But enough of this silliness, let’s talk college football.
