It’s combine time, the male version of a swimsuit calendar shoot. But don’t get too high or too low about this stuff. Like my friend Bill Smith says, “beware the workout warrior.” The site of the past Super Bowl, Indianapolis is also hosting the 2012 NFL Draft Scouting Combine. Let’s take a look at who’s draft stock is trading higher and who’s trading lower after the workouts.

Wisconsin Routs Penn State to Earn Place in Big Ten Championship (Rapid Reaction)

The play-in game for the Big Ten Championship was never really that close as the #16 Wisconsin Badgers routed #19 Penn State, 45-7, in front of a packed house at Camp Randall on Senior Night. The Badgers (10-2, 6-2) will now represent the Leaders Division against a surging Michigan State team who has won eight of their last nine.

QB Russell Wilson and RB Montee Ball proved to both be worthy of the all-mighty Heisman as both players either tied or broke NCAA records on Saturday afternoon.

Following the game, UW’s Head Coach Bret Bielema said “I think we can play with anyone in the country, regardless of conference or ranking.”

All eyes are on Heisman Hopeful Russell Wilson and how he reacts to a stifling Spartans defense. The Badgers have not fared well in East Lansing while dropping their last three at Spartan Stadium, including their only regular season loss in 2010.

Head Coach Bret Bielema has improved to 24-0 in regular season non-conference games as the #6/#7 Wisconsin Badgers (4-0) dismantled the South Dakota Coyotes (2-2) by the score of 59-10

Wide Receiver Nick Toon had a monster game with seven receptions for 155 yards and two touchdowns in front of 78,880 fans at Camp Randall Stadium.

QB Russell Wilson was just as great as he became only the fourth signal caller in UW history to pass for over 300 yards in consecutive games.

Wisconsin Badgers are the Best Team in the Midwest By Far

There’s only one team you can call elite right now in the Big Ten, and it’s not the traditional powers- the Ohio State Buckeyes (things will get worse before they get better) or Michigan Wolverines (decent start, but they always start fast, only to fade later in recent years). It’s not the two conference teams beyond the fringes of Big 10 country either-  Nebraska Cornhuskers (defense looks terrible right now) and Penn State Nittany Lions (big time issues at quarterback, plenty of other places).

And the best team in the Midwest is certainly not Notre Dame (you can commence laughing now).

The only program that could compete for a national title this season is in Madison, Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Badgers Wideout Nick Toon is a Rising Prospect

Over the past decade, the Wisconsin Badgers have emerged as an underrated hot-bed for NFL talent in the Midwest. The Badgers ability to develop professional talent peaked in 2011 when two of their alumni were drafted in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft, the Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (11th overall) and the Chicago Bears OL Gabe Carimi (29th overall).

Next in line for the Badgers in the NFL is senior wide-out Nick Toon. Just three games into the 2011 season, it appears imminent that Toon has the skills and big-play ability to become a main-stay on whatever NFL team calls his name in April of 2012. [Read more…]

Wisconsin 49, Northern Illinois 7: Rapid Reaction

The Soldier Field Showdown II quickly turned into the Soldier Field Beatdown as the #7/#8 Wisconsin Badgers (3-0) flashed their offensive dominance in a 49-7 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies (1-2).

It’s time to start calling QB Russell Wilson “Mr. Efficient” because the guy was almost perfect while completing 23 of his 32 passes for 347 yards, three touchdowns and just one late interception. Wilson also became the ninth quarterback in franchise history to eclipse the 300 yard mark and has transformed himself into a real Heisman candidate.

Wisconsin 35, Oregon State 0: Rapid Reaction

The #8/#9 Wisconsin Badgers (2-0) received an unbelievable effort from the defense in a 35-0 shut-out of the Oregon State Beavers (0-2) in week two of the college football season.

With the win, UW recorded it’s first shut-out since the 2009 season when they blanked Purdue 37-0.

Five Wisconsin Badgers to Watch Not Named Russell Wilson

Meaningful football has finally arrived as the #10/#11 Wisconsin Badgers face off with the UNLV Rebels in college football’s kick-off special. All the off-season hoopla surrounding the Badgers has centered around NC State transfer and quarterback Russell Wilson.

If it’s possible to look past Russell-Mania, there are some young and exciting players to watch on this Badgers squad. Wisconsin faces quite arguably the highest expectations in school history and these five players will be a huge part in getting this Badgers team to a BCS Bowl. [Read more…]

Nick Toon 99% Positive He’s Returning to Wisconsin

Nick Toon badgers

Wisconsin Badgers junior wide receiver Nick Toon has aspirations of playing in the NFL just like his father Al did with the New York Jets from 1985-1992.  It appears the younger Toon will put his dream on hold and return to UW for his senior season.

Scott Tolzien: Not the Flashiest of QBs, But Highly Effective

Wisconsin Badgers‘ starting quarterback Scott Tolzien may not be as flashy as Denard Robinson, Terrelle Pryor or even Ricky Stanzi, when it comes to his fellow Big Ten quarterbacks.

However, he does compare in effectiveness. The senior from Rolling Meadows, IL ranks eighth in the country with a passer rating of 176.2. His career pass efficiency of 149.8 is the best in Wisconsin history and ranks eighth among active FBS quarterbacks with at least 20 games started.

For a team which is always known for their running game, Badger quarterbacks are usually stuck in the role of an unsung hero. How many have already forgotten the names Jim Sorgi, John Stocco and Tyler Donovan?

Tolzien is doing his best to change the perception in Madison by establishing a passing game on one of the most high-powered offenses in the country.
