#12 Fighting Irish hockey splits with #3 Miami, getting serious momentum


Notre Dame overcame the sun and glare on a frigid, but sunny Chicago lakefront day. Actually Fighting Irish hockey had a huge benefit, they only were (to quote an Irish band U2 “staring at the Sun” for one of the three periods. With a sweep over the Michigan Wolverines, and now a split with the #3 Miami Red Hawks, Fighting Irish hockey is rolling right now.

They’re golden, like their hockey helmets which shone even brighter in the frigid February sun. (Seriously, this glare is awful, even way up here in the press box it’s annoying). Fighting Irish hockey prevailed 2-1 over #3 Miami in the first of the Hockey City classic’s two games. The Badgers and Gophers met in the matinee.

Notre Dame hockey prepares for Soldier Field showdown with Miami


On Sunday at noon, Soldier Field hosts NCAA outdoor hockey action in the Hockey City Classic#12 Notre Dame hockey vs. #3 Miami-Ohio. Here’s more videos, pics from the rink. The Fighting Irish are the only team that could be considered “local” of the four playing. The Badgers and Gophers will meet in the night cap.

The last time Notre Dame played Miami at Soldier Field the result was very much in the Fighting Irish favor. Of course, that was a different Miami (FL) and it was in college football. However, that event, like ND college basketball playing as a #2 seed at the United Center in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, showed that Fighting Irish fans will come to the Chi. So expect a big turnout for Notre Dame hockey as well.
