Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

The UNLV Rebels experienced a scare in their lone exhibition game, needing overtime to get past Dixie State.  Dave Rice’s team opens their season tonight against Northern Arizona and have the talent to make a ton of noise on the national scene.

With perennial top ten teams San Diego State and UNLV, the Mountain West Conference will be extremely competitive at the top this year.  The New Mexico Lobos figure to once again be in the title picture and should remain a player on the national scene.

#55 Nevada Wolfpack: College Basketball 111 in 111

Despite dominating the WAC in their swan song season, the Nevada Wolfpack missed out on the NCAA Tournament last year since they were upset in their conference tourney.  Now David Carter’s team transitions to the Mountain West Conference where the level of competition certainly picks up.

#59 Colorado State Rams: College Basketball 111 in 111

Tim Miles helped the Colorado State Rams come from nowhere to earn the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly a decade.  Miles moved on to greener pastures but the team lured Larry Eustachy from Southern Mississippi to lead a team that should knock on the door of another trip to the dance.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

With a solid core returning, the New Mexico Lobos are the preseason pick to win the Mountain West Conference.  The recent decision to redshirt sophomore big man Alex Kirk hurts their depth up-front, but UNM still has the talent to compete on a national level.

99 in 99: #25 San Diego State Aztecs

A bubble team entering the Mountain West Tournament, San Diego State won three games in three days to claim the title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  This season, there should be no worries about having their bubble burst as the Aztecs should be a Top 25 caliber club.

Time and time again, college coaches talk about the importance of guard play.  BYU head man Dave Rose should echo that sentiment as his backcourt of seniors Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery will have the Cougars once again competing for the Mountain West title.

UNLV was supposed to return their top eight scorers from last season and be a Top 25 caliber team this season.  However, off-the-court issues and a season-ending injury have slightly cooled off the hype surrounding the Rebels this season.  Still, they should be bound for the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year.

New Mexico had a breakout season in 2009-2010 making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five years and helping turn the Mountain West Conference into more than just a mid-major.  A repeat performance this season is probably asking for too much, but the Lobos will once again be in the thick of the MWC race and in the thick of the conversation on Selection Sunday.
