#12 Michigan State Football vs #18 Notre Dame: Game Preview, Prediction

michigan-state

It’s the golden anniversary of the game of the century; and also a former Cincinnati Bearcats Head Coaches Bowl. Notre Dame football renews their rivalry with Michigan State football on Saturday night and it’s a series (lately at least) that has been as exciting and as interesting as college football can be.

If the game plays out the way it looks on paper, it’ll be another tight one. To quote Spandau Ballet, “I know this. Much is. True;” as the last ten MSU-ND match-ups have been decided by an average of 1.3 ppg.

The Irish are ranked #18, while Michigan State is #12 in the latest AP poll, yet it’s the Spartans who are the underdogs, with most spreads around 7.5 points.

2013 Big Ten Football Power Rankings: Hip Hop MCs Edition

kanye-west-big-ten-football

Can’t leave Big Ten football alone the game needs me. Notorious B.I.G. once said that he raps about the ghetto because that’s what he knows. And…”if I worked at McDonald’s, I’d be rapping about Big Macs and fries.”

You write and talk what you know and live. And I know Big Ten football. We’re still a ways away from Big Ten football media days. Well, less than two weeks now. The preseason is indeed here, time for some WAY TOO Early Big Ten football power rankings

#23 Michigan State Spartans: College Football 77 in 77

msu-cheerleaders

Back to back 11 win seasons, only 7 teams in the power conferences of college football accomplished that; and the Michigan State Spartans are one. But poor MSU has zero BCS berths to show for it. In 2010 they were shafted after feasting on an easy schedule. Last year, they were an unfortunate Isaiah Lewis penalty on a very well executed Brad Nortman flop from reaching the Rose Bowl. Poor Spartans.

The Michigan Wolverines went to the BCS undeservedly ahead of them, and the Michigan St. motto “P4RB, Prepare for Rose Bowl” hasn’t happened despite 22 wins in two years. This fall they’ll be underdogs to Michigan again, even though they’ve handed big brother a defeat the past four years. Should MSU handle UM, and the rest of the division, a rematch with Wisconsin in Indianapolis likely looms.

Michigan State QB: Andrew Maxwell takes over for Kirk Cousins

msu-dance-team-sparty

Andrew Maxwell is both a Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres fan, but he picks Detroit whenever they play each other.

That’s right, he’s a man for the teams of Michigan through and through and looks up to a signal caller who played for the rival Michigan Wolverines.

“I watch a lot of (Tom) Brady film, watch a lot of Aaron Rodgers film, because their success is undeniable and they must be doing something right. Brady as far as mechanics is top of the class. I try to tailor my game a little more to them,” Maxwell said at Big Ten media day.

Michigan St. Wins 20+ in 2 years; Not bad for a “Basketball School”

michigan-state-logo

On the banks of the Red Cedar there’s a school that’s known to sports fans.

Their specialty is college basketball, and the Spartans also play great hockey. Excuse me for taking the Michigan State fight song, and changing the lyrics. But when people think about MSU sports, Tom Izzo’s hoops program comes to mind first. Six Final Fours in 11 years will do that.

Spartan football was a national powerhouse in the 1960s; and since then MSU has produced a Rose Bowl in 1988, some great wide receivers, and not much else. However, there is a very rich football history in East Lansing beyond that. Legendary leader Duffy Daugherty led the Spartans to four national titles during the 1950s.

And this year’s Spartans, led by senior QB Kirk Cousins could tie the school record for wins with a win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game, and then break it with a win over Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Penn State is “Radioactive” to Bowl Selection Committees; Big 10 Bowl Projections

penn st logo

“They’re radioactive,” a bowl official told Herb Gould of the Chicago Sun-Times yesterday. “[Bowls] wanted Joe Paterno ‘s last game, not a nightmare.”

The Nittany Lions finish the season at Ohio State and Wisconsin. The OSU game looks like a toss-up, and the Badgers will likely destroy them. That season ending tilt is looking like it’ll be the Leaders division championship game, with the winner going to Indianapolis. So Penn State still has a chance to go to the Big Ten title game and the Rose Bowl; although it looks much less likely given how they performed Saturday.

Remember, the bowl selection process is arbitrary and capricious to say the least, and since PSU is a branding and PR nightmare right now, they could fall to the Ticketcity or  Meineke Bowl. If it comes to that, hopefully the school will do the right thing and decline their bid. Even if it doesn’t come to that, and PSU ends up in one of the top five slots, they should do the right thing and decline their invitation.

Big 10 Bowl Projections; Much Hinges on Wisconsin Badgers

When looking at the Big Ten conference standings, and trying to figure out the hierarchy for the college football bowl system, I can’t help but think of one of my favorite lines from the ’80s movie “Fletch.”

“I’d say we’re in a gray area.”

“How gray?”

“Charcoal.”

We do know this however- the Big Ten bellcow is still Wisconsin (get it bellcow, dairy state?). The Badgers, last year’s Rose Bowl representative is still the favorite to go to Pasadena this year.

Bid on Bubba Smith’s Colts, NFL, Michigan St. Trophies, Awards

This past August, we tragically lost a gentle giant in Bubba Smith. Perhaps the greatest Michigan State player ever. The “Kill, Bubba, Kill” chant is etched within Spartans and college football lore. Later, Smith made his mark through the Colts and the Police Academy movies.

And when you see the tremendous amount of awards and trophies left behind in his estate, you see just how much he accomplished in his short life.

The estate sale includes the 2007 Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, Senior Bowl trophy, signed passports and Pro Bowl trophies.

Big 10 Football Power Rankings: Mediocrity, Parity, Blah Edition

There are only two times when doing a power rankings can be fun- way early in the season/preseason, or when everything is jumbled, disorganized chaos and blah. Doing a power rankings when the hierarchy is clear cut is a practice strictly for centrist, vanilla losers.

In the current Big Ten football world, mediocrity, blahness, national irrelevance, and parity reign. And remember that’s PARITY not PARODY! Weird Al Yankovic does not play tailback in college football.

I HATE when writers make that mistake worse than when announcers call coincidence “irony.” Some say the teams beat up on each other and hurt each other’s record. That’s a feeble excuse; because every team in this league is severely flawed in at least one major area. And in the interest of me being my ornery, cynical self, I’m going to highlight each team’s fatal flaw in my snippet.

Numerical rankings are from the latest BcS standings.

#11 Michigan State Spartans-#16 Nebraska Cornhuskers: Brutally Honest Game Preview

msu dance team

Maybe I was wrong to doubt Michigan State Spartans QB Kirk Cousins? Back in the summer, I believed the Spartans would be the 4th best team in the Big Ten. I was dazzled by the sexy new college football newcomer to the conference, the Nebraska Cornhuskers and their vaunted blackshirt defense.

I was wrong. I did pick State to win at Michigan, but I did not see last week’s upset coming. And Cousins maybe even knows that I was wrong too. You see, he reads your criticism and uses it to fuel the team to reach greater heights.

Maybe I still have time to come correct.

Michigan State Spartans Win National Weekly Award

msu-dance-team-sparty

Beating their “big brother” and in-state rival for the fourth consecutive time, and also assuming the driver seat of legends division race propelled the Michigan State Spartans (5-1) to earn the Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week for games of the weekend of Oct. 15.

Keshawn Martin scored twice in the third quarter, redeeming himself for his dropped touchdown pass on the first Sparty drive of the game. And the Spartans held off the Wolverines late for a 28-14 win, matching Michigan State’s longest win streak in the series since a four-game win streak from 1959-62.

Michigan Suffers 1st Season Loss at Michigan St. Still Have Cool New Uniforms

Just like I predicted on Thursday morning, the #23 Michigan State Spartans pulled the upset over the #11 Michigan Wolverines. It’s the first loss of the season for UM, and their fourth in a row to State. Little brother no more? And entire graduating class of Spartans is now undefeated against their in-state rivalry.

But hey Michigan still has some really cool new retro uniforms (more on that later). MSU used a big 14 point third quarter to win 28-14 and take control of the Legends division in the Big Ten. The winner of this game has the inside track to representing the division in the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis.
