Former MSU Spartan Garrick Sherman has huge game for Notre Dame

garrick-sherman

Notre Dame recruited Garrick Sherman coming out of high school. But the 6-10, 240 pound center choose Michigan State instead. But the Irish have him in 2012-13, and he had a huge night in ND’s 5 OT victory over Louisville, a game everyone will remember. The Shermanator is the first player to transfer to Notre Dame since June ’08 when Mike Brey welcomed 2011 Big East Player of the Year Ben Hansbrough from Mississippi State and current Irish senior forward Scott Martin from Purdue.

Sherman didn’t even play until overtime tonight, but he made the most of his minutes, getting 17 points on 7-9 shooting and 6 rebounds.

Michigan State’s Branden Dawson punches Purdue’s Travis Carroll: VIDEO

Branden-Dawson

During the Michigan State Spartans utter destruction of the Purdue Boilermakers today, you might have noticed a little punch thrown by State forward Branden Dawson on Purdue’s Travis Carroll. Tom Izzo coached players do not act like this; McDonald’s All-Americans do not like act like this. Watch the video to see the act for yourself. Of course, the Spartans deny it. Deny deny deny:

Michigan State sports information director Matt Larson sent the following in an email to the BTN:

“The angle of Branden Dawson that BTN had during the broadcast certainly makes it look like there might have been a punch. However, I’ve viewed an angle from underneath the basket and that does not appear to be the case.”

Michigan State has many non-conference wins, but most with struggles

tom izzo michigan state

There’s no question that the teams of Tom Izzo are much better in March -when it counts- then November/December. But nothing has come easy for this Spartans team. It seems like every time they play inferior competition they struggle with them. They still win, but play way down to their level.

They did it again versus Texas, trailing in the second half. Yes, the Longhorns just knocked off a #23 ranked North Carolina team, but the Tar Heels are overrated. And UT has lost to Chaminade, USC, Georgetown and USC. State won of course, but the ‘Horns were down by just two down the stretch.

MSU’s struggles started with the upset to an inferior UConn team in Germany. They only beat Boise St. by four, not pulling away from Oakland until the closing minutes, beating Lousiana-Lafayette by just three, losing to unranked Miami team, they also trailed late in the second half to Loyola and Bowling Green. They’re just not dominating teams nor closing them out. By far, the highlight of the non-conference slate was the win over now #9 Kansas.

Michigan St. Legend, NBA Prospect Draymond Green: exclusive part 3 of 3

Draymond Green MSU

There’s already been a movement to have Draymond Green‘s number retired at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan. That’s how much he meant to the Michigan State Spartans and Big Ten college basketball. He’s also an NBA draft prospect, potentially in the first round. The Sports Bank’s Ngozi Ekeledo had a very detailed exclusive with Green, discussing his past, present and future.

#1 Michigan St. vs. #4 Louisville: everything you need to know

msu

Michigan State has reached the sweet sixteen in 10 of the last 15 years. Tom Izzo is Mr. March as every player he’s recruited that has stayed in East Lansing all four years has reached at least one Final Four. Remember that whenever you fill out your brackets in future years.

The Big Ten is 9-2 in the tourney so far and comprises one fourth of the sweet sixteen. Purdue was inches away from possibly making it five teams, and 10-1. So remember that next New Year’s Day when the Big Ten gets destroyed by the SEC in bowl games. It’s the best college basketball conference this year, not the best college football conference. (That’s the SEC almost every year)

Challenging the B1G is the Big East and that brings us the Louisville Cardinals.

Michigan State advances to sweet 16 in ugly fashion!

taylor_young

During their 2000 national title run, Michigan State trailed in their second round game to Utah during the second half. At halftime, MSU led Saint Louis University just 26-21, as SLU shot 5 of 21 from the field, 2 of 11 from three, yet were only down five. SLU even cut the deficit to two inside three minutes to go in the second half.

Michigan State made the runs required to achieve victory though, holding off the Billikens (what the hell is a Billiken?) 65-61. They reached the sweet sixteen in a very sour looking game. It was ugly, grindy and muckish. Just the way, Rick Majerus wanted it.

Everything you need to know about #1 Michigan State vs. #16 Long Island

izzo-mich-st

These aren’t the most exciting match-ups in the first round of the NCAA Tournament usually. And yes, IT’S A FIRST ROUND, STOP CALLING IT THE SECOND ROUND! YOU’RE TELLING ME, IT’S A “ROUND” MEANING 60/68 TEAMS AUTOMATICALLY GET A BYE. Ok, now that I’m done pointing out NCAA idiocy, I’ll stop yelling.

The Spartans enter the tournament with the #4 RPI and the #1 strength of schedule this year, not to mention the momentum of winning the Big Ten Tournament, so they’ll be tourney tested and tourney ready.

“a lot of people always say Coach Izzo takes off the Big Ten Tournament to get ready for the NCAA Tournament. That’s such a myth,” Draymond Green said.

Agreed.

Michigan St bench, depth resembles 2000 National Title Team

mateen-cleaves

In winning their first Big Ten Tournament title since 2000, the Michigan State Spartans did it with depth and role players, kind of like the 2000 National Championship team. Granted this team today doesn’t have four future NBA players (the ’00 team had Jason Richardson, Mateen Cleaves, Andre Hutson and Morris Peterson) so you can only go so far with this analogy…of course Draymond Green looks like a late first rounder, Branden Dawson looked like a 2014 prospect before the ACL injury, and Keith Appling could develop into a pro guy be his senior year.

But the 2000 and 2012 Spartans share both a BTT title and similarly good “glue guys” and role players.

How Michigan State grabs the final #1 Seed on Sunday

msu-cheerleaders

Forget the first two #1 seeds- those are set to Kentucky and Syracuse. Yes, even with the Orange losing to the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big East Tournament.

Now that Baylor has upset Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament, a top line slot is now open. If North Carolina should get upset in the ACC Tournament, you could have two spots up for grabs.

Michigan State is probably the best team in the Big Ten; even though Ohio State is the best talent. However, the Spartans have the best match-up with the Buckeyes among the teams left in Indianapolis.

So it’s there’s for the taking.
