Viva la Sun Bowl! Notre Dame vs Miami: Game preview

Only few would have properly predicted the location of the old west Texas town of El Paso for the reunion, but nonetheless, the famed Notre Dame/Miami rivalry reignites on New Year’s Eve near the Mexican border.

Bowl games are a great reward for the teams as the players and coaches get to enjoy a few days of activities and events leading up to the game, but once the ball is kicked, no one will care that Coach Kelly took the team shopping for new boots.

Yes, that did happen.

Both teams thought they were set at the quarterback position going into the season, but entering the bowl game, that is not the case for either squad.

Jacory Harris has been wildly inconsistent all season, and the injury to the Irish’s Dayne Crist has thrust untested Tommy Rees into more action his freshman year than anyone anticipated.

Notre Dame vs. Miami in a Bowl game! Only 20 years late

“Save Jimmy Johnson’s ass for me.”

This quote is one of the more revered utterances in Notre Dame sports legend.

Lou Holtz allegedly said this to his team after a pre-game brawl between Notre Dame and Miami in a famous 1988 tilt featuring the No. 1 Hurricanes and No. 2 Irish.

It was obvious that both teams didn’t like each other. And that is putting it nicely.

The Notre Dame/Miami rivalry was a heated match-up for years in the late-80’s and early-90’s, and then poof … it was gone. And gone with it were the powerhouse traditions of these two universities.

Miami got itself back on the radar with its National Championship following the 2001 season, but it has been a mess since then, and now they are searching for a new coach.

Notre Dame, Michigan among traditional powers experiencing a down year

Tradition is one the most attractive and engaging part of sports. The pageantry of a band, the pregame festivities and the engaging mascots lure in fans and grasp their attention.

In no sport is this truer than college football.

The University of Texas lights up the crowd by having Bevo the Bull charge onto the field with the team.

The University of Miami players take the field through a plume of smoke.

The Michigan Wolverines run out under the long, yellow banner that the players jump up and slap.

USC’s Trojan Band plays “Tribute to Troy” 30 minutes before kickoff while the bandleader stabs the middle of the 50-yard-line with his sword.

Notre Dame players slap the ever-famous “Play Like a Champion Today” sign when walking down the stairs from the locker room.
