After the Chicago White Sox loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, 670 A.M. the Score broadcasters Ed Farmer and Darin Jackson indicated that GM Kenny Williams is likely going to be on the phone exploring ways to fix the back end of his bullpen. As the Sox blew another two-run lead in the ninth, it is obvious something needs to change. Today the Chicago White Sox exercised 2011 club options on catcher Ramon Castro and left-handed pitcher Matt Thornton. They also released right-hander Carlos Torres, allowing him to pursue an opportunity to pitch in Asia.  Under terms of their deals, Castro will earn a base salary of $1.2 million in 2010, and Thornton will receive a base of $3 million.

GM Kenny Williams on White Sox Stretch Run Needs

kenny_williams

With All-Star set-up man Matt Thornton and part-time closer/key reliever J.J. Putz now headed to the 15 day DL, the Chicago White Sox clearly have some deficiencies in the bullpen. And even before the injuries occurred, the bullpen had been the team’s Achilles heel the past couple weeks.

Sox GM Kenny Williams addressed the media on Tuesday, and mostly fielded questions about the Manny Ramirez rumors, but he also had a lot to say about what the team needs to fix internally; before filling gaps with additional players.

“I think more than anything what we’ve needed the last couple of weeks is just consistency out of our bullpen,” Williams said.

“They’ve fought to get ahead, they’ve fought to climb back in games and then take the lead only to lose it, I think more than anything that’s been the problem,” he continued.

Rios and Konerko SNUBBED, Matt Thornton makes AL All-Star Squad

Konerko, however is one of the five AL finalists in the Major League All-Star Game Final Vote. GO HERE to get him in. (By doing it the Chicago Way- “vote early, vote often,” we’ve had good luck getting Scott Podsednik and A.J. Pierzynski in the game in year’s past, we can do it again).

And at least Matt Thornton, the talented left-handed specialist in the White Sox bullpen made the team. The hard-throwing southpaw in his seventh Major League season, was announced one of seven appointments made by American League manager Joe Girardi during Sunday afternoon’s MLB All-Star Selection Show.

Still, this is not how we had it figured.
