#12 Duke Blue Devils: College Basketball 111 in 111

coach k

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Here’s a major reach of a statement; The Duke Blue Devils are going to be good this year.  (Although they were good last year and shocked in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament by 15 seed Lehigh.)  Do they have enough talent to be a true title contender though?  I just don’t see it.

Duke Blue Devils get Mason Plumlee back another year

mason-plumlee-duke

In Detroit they create and develop cars. In Idaho they grow and cultivate potatoes. Between rural Indiana and Duke University, the product is Plumlees.

Duke junior Mason Plumlee will return for his senior season in 2012-13, head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Tuesday.

Last season, Plumlee averaged 11.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game en route to earning third team All-ACC accolades. He was one of four players in the ACC to average at least 10.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.

2012 NBA Draft Stock Report (11/22/11)

mason plumlee nba draft

The NBA Draft Stock Report checks in on which players have made a name for themselves in the past week; either helping or hurting their future draft position.  These early pre-season tournaments give players great exposure matching up against marquee opponents on national television.  In this week’s addition,  a pair of highly touted freshman point guards look like they have a ways to go before being NBA ready while a Duke big man is finally looking like a legit lottery prospect.

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Despite losing Kyle Singler, Nolan Smith, and the top overall pick in the NBA Draft, Kyrie Irving; it will be business as usual for Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils as they once again figure to be in the national title picture.

Prepare Yourself for Plumlee Overload at Duke

marshall plumlee

You know what I cannot wait for once the 2011-2012 college basketball season starts… all the feature stories that will be done on the Plumlee brothers since all three of them will be playing together at Duke.  That will not get old at all.  No, seriously… I am in no way hoping you are reading this opening paragraph with the heavy sarcasm that I am intending it to have.

McDonald’s All-American Marshall Plumlee will join his older brothers, Miles and Mason, next season at Duke and provide Coach K. with another athletic big man.  But will Marshall finally be able to provide the Blue Devils with a true inside presence; something his big bros have been unable do.

(This is a Paul M. Banks and David Kay collaboration.)

The Sports Bank “My Boy” Team

As the collegiate basketball season comes to a conclusion this evening, there is still hardware to be handed out that isn’t related to the National Championship. There’s the All-Americans, the Cousy Award, the Wooden Award and plenty of others, however here at The Sports Bank we like to honor players in a different manner.

Duke’s Plumlee Family Domination and Tom Crean’s Strategy (Video)

This is some great college basketball insight here. Well actually, some fantastic college hoops parody. It comes to us from The Onion Sports Dome. We have Coach K.’s recruiting domination of the Plumlees, Indiana Hooisers coach Tom Crean’s unconventional methods to stop Jared Sullinger and Ohio State, and the true motivation of Jimmer Freddette.

99 in 99: #1 Duke Blue Devils

Duke NCAA Champions

The defending champs are more stacked than J-Woww’s chest.  That is saying something considering they lose three starters from last year’s team.  But the Duke Blue Devils have experience, size, athletes, shooters, and one of the best coaches in the game in Mike Krzyzewski.

The Sports Bank’s “99 in 99” has been ranking the 72 power conference college basketball teams and top 27 mid-majors for the last three-plus months and has reached the top spot.  Click here if you missed any of our in-depth previews.
