Iowa Hawkeyes’ All-Time Receiver (and Coolest Name): Marvin McNutt

Iowa Hawkeyes wide receiver Marvin McNutt, Jr. set the school record for career touchdown receptions with an 80-yarder on Saturday.  He added two more scoring receptions in the second period, giving him 24 for his career; breaking the previous mark of 21, held by former San Diego Charger Tim Dwight (1994-97) and Danan Hughes (1989-92).

McNutt has at least 100 yards receiving in four games this year and is just 313 yards from becoming Iowa’s career leader in that category. Breaking the mark of the marijuana-loving Derrell Johnson-Koulianous (sp?).

Hawkeyes Marvin McNutt, Illini Whitney Mercilus on College Football All-Name Team

With a name like Mercilus, pronounced merciless, you have to be a college football player. And a player at the very aggressive attacking position of defensive end too- that helps. Illinois Fighting Illini junior DE Whitney Mercilus is just that; a man with a name built for his role like former Illini OL Eric Block, or current Buffalo Bills DB Reggie Corner.

“I do get a lot of comments, I just walk in public, and people hear my name, and they’re like really? Mercilus that’s your last name? Yeah, it’s a cool last name and you have to play with a name like mine,” Mercilus said.

If there’s one thing the coaches could change with Whitney, it’s getting him to be less timid.

“Yeah, it’s very opposite of my name. Same thing my teammates and former teammates have told me- You’ve got to play more aggressive, stop thinking, go faster, yo look at your last name. It makes no sense for you to be playing like this,” Mercilus said at media day.

Mercilus is joined on college football’s best names in the Big Ten by Iowa Hawkeyes receiver Marvin McNutt.

Can college football season get here already? Well, I know it’s get closer when media releases like this hit my inbox.

Two University of Iowa football players earned preseason All-America recognition. Offensive lineman Riley Reiff has been named Playboy preseason All-America first team. Reiff and wide receiver Marvin McNutt, Jr., (Isn’t that the most fun name you’ve ever had the chance to read?) were both named Phil Steele’s preseason All-America team. Reiff was third team and McNutt fourth.

University of Iowa Trucks Ball State 45-0

It didn’t take long for the Iowa Hawkeyes to erase the memories of a disastrous road trip west one week ago.

The Hawkeyes outgained the Ball State Cardinals 5-yards-to-1 on Saturday on their way to a blowout 45-0 win, one that probably wasn’t as close as the score indicated.

Adam Robinson, Ricky Stanzi and a STOUT Iowa defensive line all keyed the victory. [Read more…]
