Our resident NBA nerd David Kay is on vacation this week; in a much warmer place. However, being out of the country hasn’t stopped him from being on top of the news. He’s got a lot to say on what’s been going on with the league this week.

New York Knicks sign C Tyson Chandler to 4-year, $58 million contract

The Knicks land one of the most coveted free agents and add a true big man to compliment forwards Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.  Chandler will finally provide New York with a defensive minded big man who can rebound, block shots, and fill up space in the middle, and also allow Amare to stay at his natural power forward position.

2011 NBA Free Agent Shooting Guard Rankings

With the NBA Lockout coming to an end, we now know that teams can start signing free agents on December 9th.  Like the NFL experienced once their lockout ended, there will be a frenzy period for teams to fill out rosters with the season tipping off on Christmas.

With the new labor agreement, there are some changes to NBA free agency.  A player can only receive a four-year maximum deal (five-year deal if they re-sign with their current team) and beginning in the 2013-14 season, teams will start receiving a harsher luxury tax penalty if they exceed the salary cap.  Teams will now only have three days to match an offer sheet for one of their restricted free agents.  Also, some names will be added to free agency after teams decide which players will be released under the one-time amnesty clause option.

With the salary cap expected to be around $58 million, half of the teams will under that number and have room to sign free agents.  Check out the bottom of the page to see which teams have space and how much.

Here is a look at the top free agent power forwards, where they might sign, and what kind of payday they will receive.

The Sacramento Kings continue their youth movement this summer but also have more cap space to spend in free agency than any other team in the NBA.  Here is a look at what areas they should try to up-grade this off-season.

The 2011 NBA free agency period is very much in limbo with the potential of a lockout looming.  The rules of the game can completely change in terms of how long/how much a player’s contract can be depending on what is agreed upon by the owners and players association.  Regardless of what happens, here are my rankings for the free agent shooting guards this off-season and where they could possibly end up once all the dust is settled.
