Cleveland Indians fire hitting coach, look to turn around recent struggles

It’s safe to say the Indians have hit a major brick wall in the month of June. After starting 32-20 through May, the Tribe is just 6-11 in June thus far. But with Interleague for the next 12 games, the team is in the perfect spot to turn around their struggles.

In a surprise move to try to turn the tables, the Tribe fired hitting coach Joe Nunnally, replacing him with Bruce Fields. The Indians mid-season struggles have been mainly offensive, and were apparently bad enough to let go of their hitting coach. Through 70 games, the Indians have just two hitters, Asdrubal Cabrera and Travis Hafner, hitting above .300.

Michael Brantley: Cleveland’s Unsung Hero

Down two runs in the bottom of ninth inning, the Indians were running out of chances. Looking to continue their dominance at home, the Tribe once again needed a late inning miracle, this time against Seattle. When Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera fractured his arm on Monday night, it added injury to injury — the Tribe suffers from “platoonism.” Look at Cleveland’s day-to-day roster and you’ll find few regulars taking to the fresh-cut grass every day. And that is a dangerous place to be for the Indians.

2010 Indians built on foundation of Wood

The Cleveland Indians only need to look at bullpen pitcher Kerry Wood to see a small-scale version of the team’s season. And that’s not exactly what a team in a winnable American League Central Division wants to hear following Wood’s first 2010 appearance.
