Legendary soccer coach Sir Alex Ferguson believes his star player Ryan Giggs will stay with Manchester United anther season. “he will play for another year … there are no discerning signs of tiredness or weakness in his game,” the club manager told SI.

The soon to be 40 Giggs looked great in the Red Devils’ 1-0 win over West Ham in Wednesday’s third-round replay in the FA Cup at Old Trafford, quieting the critics who think he might be over the hill.

Manchester United Getting Hit Hard by Injuries at Defense

Manchester United supporters have become accustomed to the annual defensive injury crisis in recent seasons, with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, and the da Silva brothers each on the sidelines for long periods. This season’s incarnation – hardly a surprise to anybody perusing the injury records of Sir Alex Ferguson’s defenders – has come a little earlier than normal, with the Scot’s first choice back-four absent for Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Old Trafford on Monday night.

Joining Ferdinand and Vidic on the sidelines is and Rafael da Silva, while Patrice Evra may face the Londoners depending on his recovery from a minor knee injury suffered on international duty. It is hardly ideal preparation for United’s opening home match of the new season but with nearly £50 million of youthful defensive talent still at Ferguson’s disposal injuries with open the door for Phil Jones’ first competitive start.

What Can Manchester United Expect From Michael Owen this Season?

Manchester United’s Michael Owen is known as one of the best strikers of his generation. In 1998, he became England’s youngest player and goalscorer at the time. The 1998 World Cup made him a household name and he’s the only player in history to ever have scored in four major tournaments for England. In international play, he is England’s seventh most-capped player and has scored a national record of 26 competitive goals, with 40 in total from 89 appearances, most recently in 2008.

Owen’s long injury absence after the 2006 World Cup resulted in a dispute between FIFA and The FA and Newcastle United, and eventually resulted in an unprecedented £10m compensation award to Newcastle, and brought changes to the compensation arrangements between club and country regarding injuries sustained by contracted club players while on international duty.

Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson Discusses Park’s Contract, His Own Motivation

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed this week that Manchester United F.C. midfielder Park Ji-sung is evaluating anew  two-year contract offer from the club. Ferguson expects the South Korean to approve the extension.

“We have offered him a new contract and I am sure he will sign it,” said Ferguson.

“His career at United has been nothing but excellent. He is a tremendous professional. I am sure he will accept the new offer and tie himself down at the club for the next two years.”

Manchester United Defeat Chicago Fire 3-1 in World Football Challenge

The Chicago Fire have just 2 wins this MLS season. But they looked pretty impressive to Manchester United F.C. on Saturday. This match-up between the Red Devils and the “Men in Red” was much closer than anyone expected. The Old Trafford outfit absolutely destroyed the Seattle Sounders, 7-0 in their last preseason friendly. Therefore, conventional wisdom held that this match could see more of the same.

However, this friendly held in 90 degree heat and ugly humidity at Soldier Field, turned out quite different.

Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson to Battle Chicago Fire, Heat

As the world famous Manchester United F.C. arrived in Chicago for an international friendly soccer match, they realized that they’re not just battling the MLS Chicago Fire, but also Chicago’s oppressive heat.

“We came from a nice cool atmosphere in Seattle to a furnace, so it’ll be a test for the players- both sides,” said Sir Alex Ferguson during Thursday’s media conference.

Thursday’s high temperature in Seattle was 63; in Chicago 99 officially, with numerous portions of the city recording Chicago’s first triple digit readings since 2005. Heat indexes are running in the 110s-120s and Saturday doesn’t look much better with a forecast calling for 95 degrees, with more oppressive humidity. The combination will make exercising outside for non-professional athletes extremely dangerous.

Manchester United Midfielder Darren Fletcher: Health Update

Two days before Manchester United takes on the Chicago Fire in an international friendly, United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson gave the media an update on the health of central midfielder and 2010 vice-captain Darren Fletcher, who missed a large chunk of last season and suffered substantial weight loss after contracting a bad virus in late February.

The illness forced him to miss United’s preseason schedule.
