UPDATED 2013-2014 preseason top 25 college basketball rankings

With the Louisville Cardinals cutting down the nets, the book was officially closed on the 2012-2013 college basketball season.  Hoop junkies like myself are already looking ahead to next season so allow me to present to you my updated way too early 2012-2013 preseason Top 25 college basketball rankings.

So here is my preliminary preseason Top 25 college basketball rankings for next season.  I have updated these rankings since the NBA Draft early entries list is complete and a number of transfers have since been announced.  There is still one major x-factor out there, the undecided Andrew Wiggins who is the #1 prospect in the 2013 class.  Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster.  (Click here to see how my 2012-13 way too early preseason college basketball rankings turned out.)

Louisville basketball keeps DePaul ranked opponent losing streak alive

louisville-basketball

It wasn’t always pretty but #9 Louisville basketball cruised to a 79-58 Big East road victory tonight extending a now 42-game losing streak against ranked opponents for DePaul. So much for the 8-0 start tonight by DePaul and the close, gritty first half that was anyone’s ballgame for awhile. The Blue Demons’ last win over a ranked-team was 84-76 over No. 17 Villanova on Jan. 3, 2008 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont Arena. DePaul’s last win over a top 10 team was a 64-57 decision on Dec. 2, 2006 versus the #5 Kansas Jayhawks.

DePaul fell to 11-17 overall and 2-13 in the Big East while Louisville basketball improved to 23-5 overall and 11-4 in conference. There was a lot of sloppiness in the game in the first half, a bunch of back and forth turnovers. You could almost cue up “Yakety Sax” (the Benny Hill theme song) for the type of college basketball being played during many stretches of the first half. Then in the second half, UL seemed more soothing and symphonic.

Notre Dame vs Louisville 5 OTs: instant classic

mike brey

ESPN College GameDay picked the right game to feature this week as Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center gave us the game of the regular season. Notre Dame vs Louisville on Saturday night was a 5 OT masterpiece won by ND 104-101. This was reminiscent of the 6 OT Big East Tournament game between UConn and Syracuse. Contests like these make me sad that this is a soon to be defunct conference. This was easily the college basketball game of the year.

2012 Battle 4 Atlantis Preview and Predictions

battle 4 atlantis logo

The 2012 Battle 4 Atlantis college basketball tournament tips off Thursday and is STACKED with six top 25 teams including Final Four contenders Louisville, Duke, and Missouri.  Too bad half the games are being shown on something called AXS TV while the others will be seen on NBC Sports Network (which isn’t offered to me on DirecTV even though I upgraded to the sports tier package, lame.)  Regardless, here is a preview and my predictions for how things will shake out in the Bahamas.

Here is the official bracket for the 2012 Battle 4 Atlantis.

#2 Louisville Cardinals: College Basketball 111 in 111

pitino

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Last season was the definition of a rollercoaster ride for the Louisville Cardinals that ended with the team finding their stride at the perfect time.  The Cards claimed the Big East Tournament title and then made a run to the Final Four before being ousted by in-state rival Kentucky.  With a ton of talent returning, Rick Pitino should have his squad back in the championship picture.

Louisville’s Jared Swopshire transfers to Northwestern

northwestern-mascot

Things are looking brighter for Bill Carmody in Evanston. Not only will he have one of his best recruiting classes ever coming in, with actual legitimate big men for the first time in a long time, but he also has immediate veteran help on the way to Northwestern.

That would be Louisville Cardinals forward Jared Swopshire, who was a contributor for the Big East power before getting injured and falling lower in Rick Pitino‘s rotation.

With the Kentucky Wildcats cutting down the nets last night, we can officially close the book on the 2011-2012 college basketball season.  Hoop junkies like myself are already looking ahead to next season so allow me to present to you my way too early 2012-2013 preseason Top 25.

There are still several factors that could alter a teams roster between now and the start of next season.  Some of the top players are still debating on whether or not to enter the NBA Draft, some teams will lose players to transfer, and five McDonald’s All-Americans remain undecided on their college decision including the top two recruits in the 2012 class; Shabazz Muhammad and Nerlens Noel.

So here is my preliminary preseason Top 25.  I will updated these rankings once the NBA Draft early entries list is complete and Muhammaed and Noels make their college decision.  Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster.  (Click here for my way too early preseason rankings from last season.)

Friday is usually when I do my updated Big East Basketball Power Rankings.  Since nobody cares about the DePaul’s, Providence’s, and Rutgers’ of the world this late in the season, this week’s Big East Power Rankings will an analysis of the teams in the conference who have solidified their status in the NCAA Tournament or are firmly on the bubble and still have work to do.  Let’s break down some resumes… (Click here to check out my latest bracketology.)
