Islanders Look To Make Another Statement

John Tavares

It’s almost Thanksgiving, which means it’s November and that the New York Islanders should be in the midst of some sort of record-setting losing streak. Well thanks to the additions of Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy on October fourth, plus the recently stellar play of goaltender Jaroslav Halak and secondary scoring that has been there all season, the Islanders are playing like the best team in all of New York.

Los Angeles Kings crown jewel of fancy stats

NHL: Stanley Cup Final-New York Rangers at Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings are good, lucky (maybe), and fancy stats royalty. No matter the situation, they find a way to come out on top. It’s amazing to watch and frustrating to comprehend.

For two consecutive seasons, the Los Angeles Kings have led the NHL in close-score Fenwick, which measures a team’s share of all unblocked shots put on either net during a game in relation to time of possession. While Fenwick and fancy stat sibling Corsi are by no means a be-all end-all when determining a team’s dominance, they are really good indicators for a sport in its grassroots stage of advanced statistics. Chicago Blackhawks-L.A. Kings: Part Deux

Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings meet again. Just like in 2013, the Hawks and Kings will play for the chance to represent the Western Conference in the Stanley Cup Final.

Both teams faced stiff competition to get to this point. The Kings took out the top two seeds in the Pacific Division in Anaheim and San Jose. The Blackhawks beat everyone’s “darling” St. Louis Blues and a much improved Minnesota Wild club. L.A. may have taken the hard road to get this far, but it has aid dividends. In the six games L.A. has faced elimination in, they are 6-0. [Read more…]

Chicago Blackhawks to see L.A.’s goon squad?

Chicago Blackhawks Ice Girls

The Chicago Blackhawks took care of business at home in games 1 and 2 in the Western Conference Finals. The next two will take place in L.A., where the Kings will look to get back in the series.

The Los Angeles Kings has won 14 consecutive games at home, and should look different than what fans have seen early in this series. The difference may very well be the rough stuff.

As Colin Fraser of the Kings showed in game 2, L.A. has no problem mucking it up with the opponent’s best players. Of course, what tough guy actually goes after another tough guy? Good thing Fraser is great at riding the coattails of some of the league’s best players.

chicago-blackhawks-ice-girls

The Chicago Blackhawks finished a comeback against the rival Detroit Red Wings that had players and fans bracing for any and everything.

Welp, forget it all.

Sending Detroit off to the Eastern Conference after being down 3-1 in the series was a splendid site, but dwelling now could put Chicago at a deficit. Hard to believe that as you read this, the players and coaching staff are now focusing on the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings.

Blackhawks End Two Streaks In One Night

It’s no new news that the Blackhawks are off to a slow start, but slow is an understatement at this point. Sunday night was the first home win since October 27th—that’s eighteen days between home victories.

stalberg scores

Last year, they lost all of eight home games in the entire season, taking full advantage of home ice.  This year, the Hawks were on a four-game home losing streak and we’re barely at the quarter mark of the season.

After Sunday night’s game, there were huge sighs of relief in the Hawks’ locker room and the stands. The Ducks, on the other hand, were less than thrilled.  The club had their season high six-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 overtime loss. Although they may have gained the point they needed, the loss was particularly painful in that they were literally one win away from matching the franchise-record seven-game winning streak. The record was so close they could smell it, and at the last second, the Hawks shattered what hope the Ducks had had going in to the game.
