Purdue Gets Blown out of the Building by VCU

I guess VCU will soon become a trending term. Virginia Commonwealth University might become America’s sweethearts since we have no true cinderella this march madness season, and America loves an underdog story.

It’s fitting that Purdue University’s initials are PU, given the way they played tonight. At least on the defensive end, where they surrendered 94 points to the Rams and lost 94-76 in a game that was even more lopsided than it sounds.

The Rams even won the dance team/cheerleaders battle, as one of their girls walked across the United Center court on her hands. That physical feat was more impressive than anything the Purdue Boilermakers accomplished when it came to guarding their opposition and contesting their shots.

Purdue wins 13th Consecutive NCAA Opening Round Game

purdue

For the second year in a row, the Purdue Boilermakers played, and defeated a MAAC team. Last year it was the Siena Saints, this college basketball season it was the Peacocks of ULA (sorry, “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reference) of St. Peter’s. This now makes it 13 years in a row for the Boilers; they’ve got this opening round thing down pat.

“Obviously, Purdue’s had a pretty good program for many years. It’s a very good basketball school. Obviously, Coach Keady did a good job in his 25 years. We try to get our teams ready and lock into our opponent, but also understand the most important thing is Purdue. Have our guys ready to play and compete and be together, and we’ve been fortunate enough to win some opening round games,” Coach Matt Painter said.

Purdue has Off-Court Distractions as they Begin NCAA Tournament

This March Madness, the Purdue Boilermakers, the No. 3 seed in the Southwest Region, will face No. 14 seed Saint Peter’s on Friday in second-round NCAA Tournament action. (TNT 7:20 p.m. ET) They’ll do so without sophomore guard Kelsey Barlow has been suspended for the remainder of the 2010-11 season for conduct detrimental to the team, head coach Matt Painter announced on Tuesday.

Barlow’s numbers may not jump out on you, but he’s a great defender. And his absence is just one of three off-the-court stories in the media this week which may or may not distract the Boilers away from the game.

Buckeye Recap: #11 Purdue Beats #3 Ohio State Thanks to Moore’s 38

“E’Twaun, he may put his fingers up and tell you he hit a 3-pointer, but he rarely smiles,” Purdue guard Lewis Jackson said. “Once he smiles, he’s in a zone, and you probably won’t stop him that night.” Purdue guard E’Twaun Moore was smiling all day Sunday as he lit up Ohio State for 38 points en route to a 76-63 victory.

How they lost: The Boilermakers took the lead with 3:23 left in the first half and never looked back. The Buckeyes played catchup the entire second half, eventually getting within four points after a Jared Sullinger dunk. But, it was too much Moore for Ohio State as he hit a late 3-pointer to seal the victory for Purdue.
