Kyrie Irving had to clarify remarks he made Monday night on Mike Krzyzewski’s future with the U.S. Olympic basketball program. The Cavaliers franchise point guard and #1 pick in the #NBA draft this past June, had to back off earlier made comments by saying he spoke prematurely in saying Krzyzewski would coach the 2016 U.S. Olympic team.

“I spoke to Coach K (and) he did tell me he was coaching, but I prematurely spoke on that,” said Irving, who played at Duke last season. “But I know he’s going to be part of USA Basketball. That’s the most important thing. That’s what made my decision easier.” He’s going to be part of the USA staff anyway whether he’s coaching or not. That way it’s easy for me,” he was quoted in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

How does Kyrie Irving Compare to NBA #1 Overall Picks Derrick Rose, John Wall?

Kyrie Irving NBA Draft

It’s only natural to compare Duke and soon-to-be Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving to the Washington Wizards John Wall and the Chicago Bulls Derrick Rose. After Thursday evening, it will mark three years in a row that a point guard went first overall, so this juxtaposition of the three franchise floor generals will continue on for many years.

Irving was been as good as advertised in his 11 college basketball games at Duke similar to what John Wall brought to the floor at Kentucky in ’09-’10. Offensively, he can do it all and shows a tremendous skill set for a young point guard.

Irving hung out with Wall at the NBA lottery, and met him during his official UK visit. Irving articulated the advice Wall gave him.

“He just told me to keep my head high when I go through rookie ups-and-downs, and just enjoy the draft process.”

Duke’s Kyrie Irving Ready to be a #1 Pick Franchise Player?

kyrie irving nba draft

It is thought, but not confirmed that the Cleveland Cavaliers will take Duke point guard Kyrie Irving Thursday night with the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

The Cavs haven’t told him he’ll be the first overall selection, but it is likely between him and Derrick Williams, and conventional wisdom seems to be leaning towards Irving.

With his numbers: 17.5 points per game, 4.3 assists per game, 46 percent shooting from beyond the arc, it’s easy to see why. But he’s only played 11 games of college basketball, so it’s only natural to wonder if he’s ready -physically and mentally- to be a cornerstone for a NBA franchise.

Duke’s Kyrie Irving, #1 Overall Pick? (NBA Draft Combine Video)

kyrie irving nba

There seems to be a consensus #1 regarding the 2011 NBA Draft- Duke’s franchise building point guard Kyrie Irving. Although, the Cleveland Cavaliers do have some strength at the position, so they may consider Arizona’s Derrick Williams at the #1 spot. Irving probably will go #1 despite playing in just 8 college basketball games, but if the Cavs don’t take him, I’m sure the Minnesota Timberwolves will at #2.

Here is Irving discussing numerous topics at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. Lots of media around him, and many draft issues are touched upon.

Minnesota Timberwolves’ 2011 NBA Draft Options

It was assumed that the Minnesota Timberwolves would struggle this season. But with those struggles would come improvement from a season ago.

Early on the Wolves weren’t a good team, but they were at least fun to watch as there was always an abundance of energy.

Now the Wolves look like they’ve checked out, and taken leaps backwards from the progression they showed in December.

While much of that blame can go on the shoulders of head coach Kurt Rambis, for the sake of this blog I will chalk it up to a lack of talent.

With the Wolves on the cusp of receiving a top five pick in next June’s draft, these are the five options that Wolves will have in the draft.

Kyrie Irving, PG, Duke, 6’1’’, 19.

We all can’t be as lucky as the fans in Anaheim will be this weekend watching the West Regional.  This regional has all the makings of being a great one, and one matchup in particular could surprise a lot of people – Arizona and Duke.

The Wildcats and Blue Devils are two of the more storied programs in college basketball. Dating back to when Coach K took over this Duke team, and the great Lute Olsen led Arizona to many tournament appearances.  But not only is the past great with these teams, the present and future look pretty bright too.

This game has two of the most talked about and NBA ready players in the country as of now in Duke’s Kyrie Irving and Arizona’s Derrick Williams. But that’s where the similarities stop.

Are McDonald’s All-Americans Crucial to Advancing in NCAA Tournament?

Kyrie Irving NBA Draft

With fourth-round matchups set, eight of the 16 remaining teams have a McDonald’s All American on the roster. What does that mean? We don’t know who will end up in the championship game, but we have a pretty good idea how it will end:

North Carolina and Duke Fuel Up the Rivalry

Rivalries. It’s what defines sports and in college basketball, there’s not one bigger than Duke and North Carolina.

To each team, the other is the “Evil Empire”. That’s how it works.

UNC dropped early games this season to teams like Minnesota and Vanderbilt. Harrison Barnes was looking more like Marvin Williams and less like Michael Jordan by the minute.

On the other side, after Duke’s fast start, there was talk of Duke going undefeated.

Well, after a Kyrie Irving season-ending injury and an embarrassing loss to St. Johns, the Blue Devils have been knocked off their high horse.

During that same time period, the Tarheels turned things around with a 7-1 ACC record and a No. 20 national ranking. Barnes has gotten rid of his freshman fears and looks comfortable – more than before at least.
