In a last second before the 2012 NHL Trade Deadline deal, the Blackhawks sent their main protector, defenseman John Scott to the New York Rangers. TSN reports the Blackhawks received a fifth-round pick in exchange for Scott. Getting rid of Scott leaves the Hawks without a true “enforcer” to retaliate against the hits that will be made against Hawks star forwards Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, and Patrick Kane.

It also negates deal made earlier in the day in terms of upgrading their defensemen depth.

Send in the Clowns: Blackhawks Circus Trip Preview

Even though the Bulls, the Chicago Blackhawks’ usual co-tenant of the United Center, are currently locked out as NBA owners and players haggle over who will get a bigger piece of the money pie, the Hawks will still be kicked out of the arena for the next several weeks as the circus comes to town. The annual circus trip has always been a make or break proposition for the Hawks, and this year’s western trip is no exception.

Chicago Blackhawks Report Card: First Midterm Edition

Toews needs to keep his scoring touch going.

On Saturday night, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2 at the United Center, bringing their record for the first 10 games of the season to 6-2-2. Ray Emery made 27 saves in only his second start of the season, and while the Hawks’ power play struggled to get going in an 0-for-5 performance, their penalty killing unit was perfect yet again, going 5-for-5 in keeping the Jackets off the board. Blackhawks Notes: Storylines Heading Into First Preseason Game

The Chicago Blackhawks are headed to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for their first preseason game tomorrow night, where they will play the Edmonton Oilers. The game, while not available on TV in Chicago, is going to be streaming on the Hawks’ official team website, and it will provide fans’ first glimpse into some of the changes that the team has made this off-season.

Big name players like Marian Hossa (who is finally reporting to camp tomorrow after attending Pavol Demitra’s funeral last week, as well as attending the birth of his daughter), Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, and Patrick Kane will not be making the trip up to Canada, but there is still plenty to pay attention to as the team suits up against an actual opponent for the first time since April:

Blackhawks sign former Wild Defenseman, find new “Tough Guy”

john_scott_wildThe last few days have been brutal for Chicago Blackhawks fans, as “so where’s the Cup going to be tonight?” quickly deteriorated into “which one of our beloved players is leaving town today?” as the premier hockey related question on their minds.

But hey, at least the “big four” in the Chicago core, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook are still here. And at least their enforcer and most captivating personality Adam Burish is….oh, wait never mind.

But we still got the cup! And like the Joker told Vicki Vale in the original Batman movie: “In order to make an omelet, you gotta break a few eggs.” And those eggshells accomplished something- freeing up cap space. But you also need to re-stock the carton; with something other than draft picks. Here is such an acquisition, although not exactly a headline grabbing one. Although this transaction should easily fill the newly found void at “enforcer.”
