Andrew Luck gets first taste of Indianapolis Colts-New England Patriots rivalry

The Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots have shared what arguably has been the best rivalry in American professional sports for much of the previous decade.

Who can forget New England’s triumphs against Peyton Manning in the snow in Foxborough, Mass. during both the 2003 and 2004 playoffs? Or the epic Colts comeback in the 2006 AFC Championship game en route to Super Bowl glory?

In truth, the NFL largely has become what it is today because of these two teams (all-time great quarterbacks, as well as Bill Polian’s successful lobbying for rules changes after the 2003 AFC Championship game).

Now, though, the rivalry welcomes a new significant face: Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck.

Indianapolis Colts Lose Again, Now in Driver’s Seat for No. 1 Pick

The previous weekend was a rather turbulent one for the Indianapolis Colts.

It was capped, of course, with another loss, this one a 31-7 drubbing at home to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Depending on one’s perspective, however, the loss might have been a blessing, as the Miami Dolphins, who until Sunday were the NFL’s only other winless team, beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-3 for their first win of the season — giving the Colts the inside track for the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft and its prospective prize, Stanford quarterbakc andrew Luck.

But those weren’t the only story lines surrounding the Colts during this rough weekend.

Indianapolis Colts Raise Many Questions in Blowing Lead against Kansas City

So much for the common perception that the Indianapolis Colts’ defense is built to play with a lead.

The Colts’ stop unit surrendered 21 unanswered points after the team’s offense established a 17-point lead, and Indy suffered a crushing 28-24 home loss Sunday to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now 0-5 for the first time since 1997 after blowing what might have been their best chance to date at their first win of 2011, the Colts go forward with many questions — one of them being when that first victory will come. [Read more…]
