Northwestern vs. Iowa Recap: Cats dominate Hawkeyes

Northwestern knew it needed a win against Iowa Thursday night in order to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive. With that in mind, The Wildcats promptly turned in arguably their best performance of the season, a convincing 83-64 win over the Hawkeyes.

Point guard Dave Sobolewski led the way for NU, recording a season-high 26 points and team-high seven assists. The freshman’s impressive performance evoked memories of former Cats’ star Michael Juice Thompson. Sobolewski said that Thompson has helped him deal with recent criticism.

Northwestern Wildcats 73, Iowa Hawkeyes 70: Rapid Reaction

Though many fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes were in attendance Thursday night, the most famous of the faithful: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were not at Welsh-Ryan Arena to see their Hawks drop yet another college basketball game; this time to the Northwestern Wildcats.

Although it was much less closer than the first meeting. The Cats shot the lights out to an almost historical level on January 12th in Iowa City, winning 90-71 in a game that was even more lopsided than it sounds.

However, the change of venue from road to home ended up in a -16 point swing. Usually, the differential in that situation goes completely the opposite.

“It wasn’t as fluid as I would have liked, or the team would have liked but we got it done,” NU Coach Bill Carmody said.

Demi and Ashton Get Iowa Basketball into NCAA Trouble

The Todd Lickliter era hurt the state of Iowa hoops significantly. The Hawkeyes are expected to be a Big Ten doormat again this winter, but they did make a solid coaching hire in Fran McCaffery. The former leader of the Siena Saints built up that mid-major program, and it’s expected he can make similar or better strides with the Hawkeye program.

But first, he’ll have another recruiting setback to deal with.
