#71 Iona Gaels: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Behind the highest scoring offense in Division One last year, the Iona Gaels accomplished the difficult feat of earning an at large bid into the NCAA Tournament as a mid-major team.  However, Iona suffered a collapse of epic proportions in their opening round game and as a result was bounced by BYU.  Tim Cluess loses several key contributors from last year’s team and will rely on a plethora of newcomers to keep the ball rolling.

With graduation, players leaving early for the NBA Draft, and transfers galore; college basketball teams are experiencing more year-by-year turnover than ever before.  Here are five teams who made the 2012 NCAA Tournament this season but will likely take a step back next year and have their work cut out for them if they want to return to the Big Dance.

The MAAC figures to be a two horse race between Iona and Fairfield this season.  The Gaels return their top four scorers and two All-MAAC First Team members who lead the team into the season.
