Columbus trading Rick Nash: it’s complicated!

CBJ

It’s expected that the Columbus Blue Jackets will trade their only true All-Star player and face of the franchise Rick Nash on or before the upcoming NHL Entry Draft on June 22nd.  Rumored trade discussions and speculated trading partners have been flying almost as quickly as trying to keep the hottest of DVDs on a Blockbuster ™store shelf.

And while some pundits and local observers believe this long-speculated trade of Nash is a forgone conclusion and will go down before the draft, I believe that doing so is a lot more complicated than that and I’ll explain why.

Is Columbus Blue Jackets Recent Surge too Little, too Late?

CBJ

Just when it appeared that the Columbus Blue Jackets were headed for a repeat of their late November-late January swoon (a 6-14-3 run which was eerily similar to their 3-14-7 debacle during the same period last season) they have rebounded with a stirring 10-3-3 run which has put them right in the thick of the Stanley Cup playoff race. While the Blue Jackets are four points away from the eighth seed, they have some games in hand to those teams who are currently ahead of them in the NHL Western Conference standings.

Coupled with the NHL trade deadline which is merely four days away, it begs the question: Is the Blue Jackets recent successful run a good thing or a bad thing?

Before you question my sanity (don’t worry, it’s been done before) let me explain why this somewhat crazy notion may have some merit.

Five Players Likely to Be Moved at NHL Trading Deadline

arniel

The NHL’s Trade Deadline is just a little under two weeks away (February 28th, 3 P.M. EST).

There have already been four intriguing trades, to date:  Mike Fisher to the Nashville Predators for Nashville’s first round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and future considerations in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft; Michael Frolik to the Chicago Blackhawks in a five-player deal, to include Jack Skille; Francois Beauchamen returning to Anaheim in exchange for Joffrey Lupul, a prospect and a conditional pick; and Kris Versteeg to the Philadelphia Flyers for a pair of draft picks, one of which is a future first round pick. Add to that the ultra-tight races for the Stanley Cup playoffs, and you have the makings of a very interesting trade deadline season.

NHL Trade Rumors Swirling, Especially in Columbus

arniel

Trade discussions around the NHL are heating up as teams move closer declaring themselves as “buyers” or “sellers”

And with the deadline looming, speculation arises with all the hockey pundits, including TSN’s Darren Dreger, who reported that the Blue Jackets could be on the verge of a major deal in yesterday’s version of ‘The Dreger Report‘.

Sources around the league consider the Columbus Blue Jackets to be among those most eager and perhaps, closest to making a significant deal.

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson doesn’t speak publicly about trade negotiations and won’t comment on speculation a few of his key players may be in play. However, Columbus goaltender Steve Mason (the 2009 NHL rookie of the year), young forward Jakub Voracek (selected seventh overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft) and 28-year-old defenseman Rusty Klesla – the Blue Jackets’ first ever draft pick (fourth overall in 2000) are believed to be drawing trade interest.
