Iowa Hawkeyes name new defensive coordinator


Phil Parker, DBs coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes the past 13 seasons, has gotten a major promotion- to defensive coordinator.  Kirk Ferentz announced late last night.

Parker, a member of the Iowa staff since Ferentz took over as head coach, replaces Norm Parker, who retired following this past season.  Phil Parker was named by Rivals.com in March, 2011, as a first team member of its College Football Assistant Coach Dream Team.

Hawkeyes Leading Rusher Marcus Coker Leaves Program


The Iowa Hawkeyes announced that sophomore running back Marcus Coker withdrew his application to enroll in spring semester.  He also asked for a release from his football scholarship and it was granted.

In other words, he is no longer part of the college football program.

Iowa Hawkeyes Suspend Star RB Marcus Coker for Bowl Game


Iowa Hawkeyes tailback Marcus Coker goes from 2010 Insight Bowl MVP to 2011 Insight Bowl suspendee today.

Last year he set Iowa bowl records for rushing attempts (33) and rushing yards (219) in the 27-24 win over Missouri. Hopefully, he also got to see the Grand  Canyon last year, because he will not be traveling with the team to Arizona.

Former Patriots, Chargers, Falcons WR to be Iowa Hawkeyes Honorary Captain

Remember the name Tim Dwight? Or Timothy Deutch Dwight, Jr. originally taken by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL Draft.

Dwight, who has the sweetest nickname ever “white lightning,” is perhaps best known for his 94-yard kickoff return TD for Atlanta in Super Bowl XXXIII. He has also played for the San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots, New York Jets and Oakland Raiders in his career.

A highly endangered species these days (by that I mean a white return specialist) Dwight finished his college career with Big Ten records for punt return yardage (1,102) and punts returned for touchdowns (5);

He’ll forever be an Iowa Hawkeyes legend.

Iowa Hawkeyes’ All-Time Receiver (and Coolest Name): Marvin McNutt

Iowa Hawkeyes wide receiver Marvin McNutt, Jr. set the school record for career touchdown receptions with an 80-yarder on Saturday.  He added two more scoring receptions in the second period, giving him 24 for his career; breaking the previous mark of 21, held by former San Diego Charger Tim Dwight (1994-97) and Danan Hughes (1989-92).

McNutt has at least 100 yards receiving in four games this year and is just 313 yards from becoming Iowa’s career leader in that category. Breaking the mark of the marijuana-loving Derrell Johnson-Koulianous (sp?).

Iowa Hawkeyes QB James Vandenberg Receives Manning Award

University of Iowa quarterback James Vandenberg has been named one of eight Manning Award “Stars of the Week” and also nominated for Intersport’s Quarterback Performance of the Year award.

Both recognitions were announced after Vandenberg’s career day in the Hawkeyes’ thrilling comeback win over Pittsburgh.

The Manning Award, sponsored by the Sugar Bowl, named eight different quarterbacks as its “Stars of the Week.”
