The Gonzaga Bulldogs aren’t just great on the court, they’re exceptional at the art of the trick shot. Gonzaga accomplished the school’s first 30-win season, a No.1 seed in the NCAA tournament, also a first, and for awhile they were the top ranked team in college basketball. This is all uncharted territory for the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Welcome Gonzaga Bulldogs to the West Regional, where they are a #1 seed. They get to stay close to home, which will be advantageous for Gonzaga Bulldogs fans.

#22 Gonzaga Bulldogs: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series. Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days. Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order. We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! Gonzaga’s streak of 11 straight WCC regular season titles ended last year when Saint Mary’s knocked the Zags off their throne. In typical Mark Few fashion, he’ll have the Bulldogs in conference championship contention and competing on the national level.

UPDATED 2012-2013 college basketball preseason top 25

Here is an updated on my preseason Top 25 for the 2012-2013 college basketball. With transfers, the decisions of some previously undeclared top high school recruits, and players declaring their intentions to return to school or leave for the NBA Draft, there has been a lot of movement since I released my original rankings the day after the National Championship game. (Click here for a list of NBA Draft early entries.) Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster. 2012-2013 college basketball preseason top 25

With the Kentucky Wildcats cutting down the nets last night, we can officially close the book on the 2011-2012 college basketball season. Hoop junkies like myself are already looking ahead to next season so allow me to present to you my way too early 2012-2013 preseason Top 25.

There are still several factors that could alter a teams roster between now and the start of next season. Some of the top players are still debating on whether or not to enter the NBA Draft, some teams will lose players to transfer, and five McDonald’s All-Americans remain undecided on their college decision including the top two recruits in the 2012 class; Shabazz Muhammad and Nerlens Noel.

So here is my preliminary preseason Top 25. I will updated these rankings once the NBA Draft early entries list is complete and Muhammaed and Noels make their college decision. Leave a comment below if you think a team is too high, too low, not getting enough respect, or if you notice an error in a projected roster. College Basketball: The Week Ahead (12/20/11)

College Hoops 101 has undergone a facelift. My weekly breakdown of the past week in college basketball and look ahead will now be split into two parts. (Click here for a look at the past week.) This week’s edition of the “The Week Ahead” looks at the best games of the up-coming week including a preview of the annual Braggin’ Rights game between Missouri and Illinois, and why Xavier will be upset in the opening round of the Diamond Head Classic.

Illini Upset #18 Gonzaga; Illinois is Better than You Think

Even when Illinois is having a down year, or a “rebuilding year,” they still get at least one win in over a ranked team. In 1998-99 and 2007-08 (two college basketball seasons that saw Illinois break the school record for losses) they still beat a couple ranked teams- even if it didn’t happen until the Big Ten Tournament.

It’s a hallmark of where Illinois is as a program, even in lean years they’re serviceable. Most experts expected this season to be a down year in Champaign, and that’s understandable given all the questions marks. However, as today’s solid, comfortable win over a top 20 team shows, the Illini might be a better team than you think they are.

Carrier Classic: ’09 National Championship Rematch Reaches New Heights

For the Michigan State basketball team, the tests that the players take in the classroom are probably a breeze compared to the tests Tom Izzo gives them.

How’s this for a multiple-choice question? To open your season you will:

a) Face a #1 ranked UNC squad

b) Face a top-ten Duke team at Madison Square Garden

c) Face a Gonzaga team in a game that has packed much more meaning in the past few years on the ‘Zags’ home court.

d) Face a Florida State team that did maximum damage in the ACC last season

e) All of the above

If you guessed E, you’re correct and you probably already know that a heavy-hitting schedule for Tom Izzo’s team isn’t even a surprise anymore. It’s expected. The words “cupcake schedule” don’t fly in East Lansing.

But opening on this tough tear may be just the swift kick-start that puts a little hair on the chests of this young remodeled team of Spartans players.

#17 Gonzaga Bulldogs: College Basketball 111 in 111

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series. Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days. This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days. We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order. We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

11 straight conference championships. 14 twenty-plus win seasons in a row. 13 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. It will be business as usual for the Gonzaga Bulldogs as they should remain the kings of the West Coast Conference even with the arrival of BYU. Unlike recent years though, the Zags will rely on their veteran frontcourt as they go through some transition at guard.
