Cold Day at the Kohl Center: Iowa Hawkeyes Knock Off #11 Wisconsin

No, this headline is not a misprint, the #11 Wisconsin Badgers have indeed dropped their conference home-opener to the Iowa Hawkeyes by the score of 72-65.

Iowa (9-6, 1-1) took full advantage of a horrendous-shooting performance from the Badgers (24-for-69) and a lackluster showing on the defensive end despite Wisconsin (12-3, 1-1) being one of the best in the nation on that side of the ball.

Iowa Hawkeyes Shock #6 Purdue Boilermakers 67-65

A loud, relentless crowd of 12,132 were in attendance for Senior Day at Carver Hawkeye Arena watching the Iowa Hawkeyes (11-19) shock the nation by upsetting the No. 6 Purdue Boilermakers (25-6), 67-65, in a Big Ten thriller.

Even with the potential to have a share of first place in the Big Ten on the line for Purdue, Jarryd Cole and the Hawkeyes were too much for Purdue to handle, as the Hawkeyes ended their imperfect regular season in style. This win also ended a seven-game win streak for the Boilermakers that included wins over Wisconsin and top-ranked Ohio State.

But, the most impressive part of the Hawkeye’s victory was how well the Hawkeyes played as a team today, with nine players on the squad having at least one basket and one rebound.

Northwestern Wildcats 73, Iowa Hawkeyes 70: Rapid Reaction

demi-and-ashton-iowa

Though many fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes were in attendance Thursday night, the most famous of the faithful: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were not at Welsh-Ryan Arena to see their Hawks drop yet another college basketball game; this time to the Northwestern Wildcats.

Although it was much less closer than the first meeting. The Cats shot the lights out to an almost historical level on January 12th in Iowa City, winning 90-71 in a game that was even more lopsided than it sounds.

However, the change of venue from road to home ended up in a -16 point swing. Usually, the differential in that situation goes completely the opposite.

“It wasn’t as fluid as I would have liked, or the team would have liked but we got it done,” NU Coach Bill Carmody said.
