What does and doesn’t make a rivalry

fsumia

Ayn Rand once said, “Indifference, not hatred is the opposite of love.”

Remember that quote the next time you voice hatred for your rival team. Red Sox fans hate the Yankees, but they desperately need the Yankees in the same way the Jedi needed the Sith. Rivalry unifies and defines. And it starts early.

In a Boston sports memorabilia shop, I once overheard two seven-year old Massachusetts girls fight each other with taunts of ‘Yankee fan! Yankee Fan;’ they also slapped one another across the face with pinstriped clothing. But in all rivalries, the loser is the side exhibiting more hatred, anger, and fear for its opponent.Think of “Sibling Rivalries;” the same exact principle applies in sports rivalries.

Notre Dame and the ACC: I called this two years ago

Notre-Dame-football

Editor’s note: I originally published this on December 29th, 2011. Looks like I saw the future a few months ahead:

As Notre Dame prepares to kick off versus Florida State today in the Champs Sports Bowl, the answer to where ND fits in the long term conference expansion is becoming painfully obvious. The Irish will face their fourth ACC opponent, and look to go 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

#46 Florida State Seminoles: College Basketball 111 in 111

fsu cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Overrated. (Clap, clap, clap-clap, clap).  Even though they lost six valuable seniors from last season’s team that won the ACC Tournament, the Florida State Seminoles are ranked 24th in the preseason coaches’ poll.  As you can tell by my ranking, that’s way too high for a squad that will have to rely on a lot of inexperienced players in key roles.

Notre Dame Season Ends and Begins the same: Critical Red Zone INT

tommy-rees

The season ending loss to the Florida State Seminoles had a few things in common with the season opening defeat to South Florida: the quarterbacks threw too many interceptions, especially in the red zone; the defense kept bailing out the offense only to see the O turn it over again. And the explosive Brian Kelly hissy fit on the sidelines, caught on national television.

This time quarterback Tommy Rees was his victim. When he see his box score 16-26-163, 1 td, 2 int, I think you can understand why.

He switched in and out with Andrew Hendrix, who was actually much worse: 3-8-24, int.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State in Champs Sports Bowl

jenn-sterger-florida-state

Last spring, well, it wasn’t spring from a meteorological sense, but it was technically that season on the calendar, the #10 seeded Florida State Seminoles upset the #2 seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was a de facto road game for the ‘Noles as they sent ND home early from the United Center in Chicago. That was the college basketball postseason, now they rematch in the college football postseason in Orlando, Florida- a de facto road game for Notre Dame.

#33 Florida State Seminoles: College Basketball 111 in 111

florida state cheerleaders

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s second annual college basketball season preview series.  Last year we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  This year, we are being slightly more aggressive and expanding to 111 teams in 111 days.  We will rank the 74 power conference teams and top 37 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

Defense, size, and physicality; that has been the name of the game for the Florida State Seminoles the past few seasons and will once again be the case for the 2011-2012.  The ‘Noles are not at the level of North Carolina or Duke, but are certainly a class above the rest in the ACC.

Sooners Down Seminoles: Five Thoughts on Oklahoma’s Victory

Florida State hot chicks

Landry Jones came into a raucous atmosphere at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday night having a checkered track record in road games. He was 3-5 in true road games as the QB of the Oklahoma Sooners, and going into a stadium that was louder than it has been in nearly a decade, it was going to be a huge test of his resolve and ability to call an effective game for the number one team in the country.

As for the Florida State Seminoles, this game provided an opportunity for them to get the kind of statement win that teams don’t get a lot of chances to get. The program has lost some of its luster since its heyday around 10 years ago, but with a young and exciting quarterback in EJ Manuel and an energetic head coach in Jimbo Fisher, the ‘Noles are looking to get back to prominence, and Saturday night was a tantalizing opportunity on national TV and in front of their home fans.

#1 Oklahoma Sooners vs. #5 Florida State Seminoles: Brutally Honest Game Preview

sterger

With top-ranked Oklahoma visiting fifth-ranked Florida State, we have our first de facto in season playoff game. Since college football doesn’t have a playoff system, and really a joke of a postseason when you think about it, the regular season becomes single elimination playoffs. Because you need to be undefeated to even have a chance to play for a national title.

The national spotlight will shine on Tallahassee, Fla., Saturday night (7pm CT) as two of the top teams in the nation but heads. EJ Manuel and the No. 5-ranked Florida State Seminoles (2-0) will welcome Landry Jones and the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners (1-0) to Doak S. Campbell Stadium.

Manuel and the Seminoles, averaging 509.5 yards of total offense and 48 points per game, have outscored their opponents 96-10 at home thus far. In the Sooners’ season opener, Jones threw for 375 yards on 35 completions while helping Oklahoma to 663 yards of total offense.

Last season, Oklahoma, which holds a 5-1 advantage in the series, took a 47-17 win over Florida State.

#5 Florida State Seminoles: College Football 77 in 77

Expectations are sky high in Tallahassee this fall. But I have to be honest, I believe the main theme of this Florida State Seminoles season will be more like 1991 or ’92, or some of those mid 90s teams that just missed than the 1993 or 1999 national championship seasons. When I look at this roster, and focus in on class standing, I think 2012 is their year to win it all. So hopefully the Mayan calendar is wrong with its late December apocalypse, because that would fall a few weeks ahead of the title game.

Former ‘Noles legend Danny Kanell seems to agree with me.
