Will Evan Turner Play in his Return Home to Chicago vs. Bulls?

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. No, not at all.

After Ohio State University superstar Evan Turner was taken by the Philadelphia 76ers second overall in last June’s NBA Draft,  and the NBA schedule came out, I circled December 21st on the calendar, the date ET came home to face the Chicago Bulls. The Southside native who prepped with Illini point guard Demetri McCamey at St. Joseph in suburban Westchester, was going to start a professional game in his home town for the first time.

After sweeping all the national player of the year awards in college basketball, Turner looked to be on his way to becoming Philly’s franchise centerpiece. But after struggling in summer league, and getting off to a rough start in his rookie season, Turner now finds himself on the bench and hardly playing at all.

#2 Pick Evan Turner Struggling with Sixers So Far

Last spring,  I had the pleasure of covering all four weekends of March Madness. This college basketball vocational voyage, which I dubbed the “Midwest Swing,” granted me a lot of face time with the national player of the year Evan Turner. This kid from my hometown of Chicago swept all the player of the year awards en route to winning the Big Ten Tournament, reaching the sweet 16 and becoming the #2 pick in the NBA Draft.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were prominently featured in three of the four Regionals I covered in 2010, so I got to see Turner and his teammates play a hell of a lot.

From March until the beginning of the NBA season I saw Turner: become a national sensation by hitting a half-court buzzer beater to eliminate the Michigan Wolverines, whine to the media about Illini trash-talking him the next day, win a conference tournament and later every important individual award, get eliminated by Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen, get drafted second overall, get rattled by trash talk again (this time from the Purdue Boilermakers Student Section Twitter account) struggle massively in Summer League and begin his professional career.

This July, the NBA Summer League is certainly taking a back seat to the NBA Free Agency period. But here at The Sports Bank we got you covered. Especially when it comes to His Royal Smoothness Evan Turner, the most blogged about individual in TSB history. Although David Kahn, Adam Burish, Erin Andrews and Jenn Brown are not far behind.

They say only geeks and die-hards follow the NBA Summer League. Well, include me in that group. Hey this is Mr. Turner, a southside Chicago native we’re talking about, and he put on a clinic Monday night.

Evan Turner talks about spending his new Money (Video)

Evan Turner NBA Draft

Remember this past March when Demetri McCamey, D.J. Richardson and the rest of the Illini were talking trash to Ohio State‘s Evan Turner in Big Ten Tournament semifinal game? And Turner responded by later showing the “holding my dollars” sign at the Illini bench?

Presumably that was in reference to all the money he’ll make in the NBA come June.

Well TMZ.com indeed sent this link to the right place. Because TMZ obtained video hours after the Philadelphia 76ers took Chicago native Evan Turner as the #2 overall pick in last night’s 2010 NBA Draft — the 21-year-old and his family hit Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club in NY … where he told TMZ.com how he plans to spend his new fortune.

OSU’s Evan Turner is a polarizing figure

evan turner

By Paul M. Banks

INDIANAPOLIS- Big Ten player of the year, and likely national player of the year Evan Turner has become quite the polarizing figure this weekend. The Ohio State swing-man made magical memories for OSU fans on his way to becoming Big Ten tournament MVP. But he also angered many partisans of the teams who were vanquished by the Ohio State Buckeyes; en route to their tournament championship.
