The ‘David Kahn’ Era

David Kahn

When Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor named David Kahn the president of basketball operations, he expected to have a playoff-contending team by now. Instead, in his four years on the job he has made more trades than times Dwight Howard has changed his mind about being traded, drafted more point guards than an apartment complex could support, and traded away more draft picks than Jarrod Saltalamacchia has letters in his last name. And now, the T’wolves are in another transition of which I am about to get to.  [Read more…]

Optimism actually surrounds Minnesota Timberwolves this off-season

ricky rubio kevin love

40 games into the 2011-2012 NBA season and the Minnesota Timberwolves were actually competing for a Western Conference playoff spot.  An injury to Ricky Rubio derailed the T-Wolves surprising start to the season but proved that there is reason for optimism in Minnesota and that the team doesn’t need to make any drastic moves this off-season.  Still, a few upgrades could help them get back into post-season next year.

Minnesota Timberwolves “luck” might be turning around?

Minnesota Timberwolves

I know the last few years have been down-right dreadful for fans of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Our last few draft picks (Wes Johnson and Derrick Williams) haven’t panned-out, so far or yet. But, Ricky Rubio brought a spark this season before his ACL injury. He lit-up Target Center with his maestro passing skills and non-matador-esque defensive ability that most of his teammates (Michael Beasley) have shown the past few years. He might just be the beginning of a Minnesota-turnaround, though.

Cleveland Cavaliers select Tristan Thompson with 4th overall pick in 2011 NBA draft

With the 4th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Tristan Thompson, a forward from Texas.

Surprised by this pick? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

After Enes Kanter went 3rd overall to the Jazz, the popular belief was that the Cavs would select Jonas Valanciunas as the 4th pick. Few, if any, predicted Thompson would be selected, but Dan Gilbert is no stranger to stirring up controversy.

Cleveland Cavaliers select Kyrie Irving with top overall pick in 2011 NBA draft

kyrie irving nba draft

With the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers have selected Kyrie Irving, the point guard from Duke.

Though the Cavs kept completely silent about the pick leading up to the announcement, this choice does not come as a surprise. For weeks, experts and insiders have been predicting the Cavs to take Irving first.

Is Arizona’s Derrick Williams a Power Forward or Small Forward in the NBA?

derrick williams nba draft

Other than Marquette and Wisconsin, I have watched more Arizona Wildcat games in the past two seasons than any other team.  (And remember, I have watched more than 900 college basketball games in the past three years.)  Seeing Derrick Williams‘ meteoric rise on NBA Draft boards during that time has been rather remarkable.  And now, barring a crazy trade or some dumb David Kahn decision, Williams will be one of the top two picks in Thursday’s 2011 NBA Draft.

(This is a David Kay/Paul M. Banks Collaboration.)

Ricky Rubio Will Be a NBA Bust

ricky rubio timberwolves

Not much has gone right for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the last twenty plus years.

They had a brief flirtation with success during the Flip Saunders and Kevin Garnett years, but the well has been almost completely dry otherwise. The frustration was palpable this spring when general manager David Kahn went over the edge expressing his concerns with the NBA lottery.

The Cleveland Cavaliers garnered the top pick this season and Kahn insinuated that the result was due to anything but the randomness of the ping pong balls. The team will presumably pick up forward Derrick Williams from the Arizona Wildcats after the Cavaliers take Kyrie Irving from Duke. This is not horrible news because the experts do believe that the two at the top of the draft have a large separation from the rest of the field.

What the Cavaliers should do with their draft picks

derrick williams nba draft

The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off a dismal season in which the team created new records for futility (losing 26 games in a row, in case you forgot). However, with the first and fourth pick the 2011 NBA Draft, the Cavs have been handed a golden opportunity to right the ship. Now, all management has to do is not mess it up. [Read more…]

The Deeply Beleaguered Minnesota Sports Fan

Tubby Smith Minnesota

Sports fan in Minnesota haven’t had a whole lot to cheer about recently. The general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves, David Kahn, received some flack recently for simply stating the obvious. The NBA lottery is a flawed system that annually does not give the team the position it deserves in the draft.

He insinuated that the good story of the year obtains the pick.

Once again, the club fell victim to the ping pong balls. It doesn’t seem to be a year that it will be of great impact because there are two players that are head and shoulders above the rest: Derrick Williams of the Arizona Wildcats, and Kyrie Irving of Duke.

ESPN’s Chris Broussard is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Detroit Pistons are discussing a three-way trade that would drastically shake up the lottery of the 2011 NBA Draft.  Here’s a breakdown why the potential deal does or does not make sense for each team.
