North Carolina All-American Latest of Many to Praise Demetri McCamey

Demetri McCamey Illinois

During his college basketball career, Illinois point guard has received a lot of hype from the media, but also a fair amount of criticism. Illini fans have similarly (perhaps even more so) had a disjointed, and almost bi-polar assessment of Meechi.

This year however, it’s become increasingly clear that Demetri McCamey IS good. Period.

Yes, his defense can still be a bit….”Ben Gordonesque,” but it is improving. And he’s trying much harder at it than ever before (see his recent surge in “Matto” points, the Illini scoring system of hustle plays). He’s also more disciplined than ever. The NBA Draft workouts this summer inspired him to condition better and lose weight; and today he’s in fantastic game shape.

Demetri McCamey’s NBA Draft Stock Rises with Illini Wins

When Illini point guard Demetri McCamey was a freshman, he was a highly regarded recruit with a few explosive games but also terrible choice in shot selection. His sophomore year, the Illini needed a leader and a closer and McCamey developed into that go-to-scorer. He developed immensely on offense, but was still non-existent on defense.

Meechi’s junior season, he pretty much WAS Illini basketball. He made huge strides in his individual game despite his team’s considerable regression. McCamey became the team’s unquestioned leader, but wasn’t vocal enough in asserting his leadership. He finished second in the nation in assists, and broke a single game school record in that same statistic.

He tested the waters of the NBA draft, and learned what he needed to do when returned to Champaign.

CHICAGO- I’m back in my hometown and I’ve now had a whole day to take in all that transpired on Championship/Selection Sunday. “The Chi” is also home to Kansas’ Sherron Collins and Ohio State’s Evan Turner, two of the five members of the United States Basketball Writers Association All-America Team. Just announced today. I voted for both in my USBWA ballot.

Turner absolutely took over the Big Ten Tournament this past weekend, and we were treated to the greatest individual performance in tournament history. On Friday, in the Big Ten quarterfinals, his 40-foot buzzer beater to eliminate Michigan was the lead national story in almost every sports outlet.
