Notre Dame Names Dayne Crist Starter at Quarterback

Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly said today that Senior Dayne Crist will be the starting quarterback in the season opener versus South Florida September 3rd.

Tommy Rees was the other starting candidate, and Kelly said the difference between the two QBs was very small. Last year, Crist started 9 games before a knee injury sidelined him for the season.  ND went 4-5 in his starts as he completed 59% of his passes, threw for 2,033 yards and 15 TDs.

Who will be the Best QB in College Football this Fall?

Never has there been more excitement for college football award watch lists. The twin lockout-induced free agency voids in the NFL and NBA has given us even less to talk about during MLB’s slowest (and overall sports’ slowest) week for media. Cuz NO ONE cares about the All-Star game and the ratings numbers reflect that.

Let’s talk gridiron! As the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced the 2011 Watch List today for its trophy honoring the nation’s top QB.

This year’s list, which was compiled by a subset of The O’Brien National Selection Committee, features 38 of the nation’s top collegiate quarterbacks who were selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2011 college football season.

In addition to last season’s finalists, Andrew Luck (Stanford) and Kellen Moore (Boise State), 2009 O’Brien finalist Case Keenum (Houston) is back in the action. This year’s list also includes seven 2010 semifinalists: Matt Barkley (USC), Kirk Cousins (Michigan State Spartans), Robert Griffin III (Baylor), Landry Jones (Oklahoma), Taylor Martinez (Nebraska Cornhuskers), Denard Robinson (Michigan Wolverines), and Darron Thomas (Oregon)

Notre Dame Quarterback Derby will Be Intriguing this Summer

dayne-crist-nd

During one of his banner seasons leading the Cincinnati Bearcats, current Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly played two QBs. This fall in South Bend, it could happen again. Maybe.

Dayne Crist is the projected starter, with Tommy Rees number two as of today, but the depth chart isn’t set in stone, or anything like that, as of now.

“We’ll have to obviously cut back and hone in on who the starter and back-up in that order is,” Kelly said after the Blue/Gold spring game.

“but we have knowledge now.  Now we can move forward in making some of those tougher decisions relative to who is one, and who is two.”

For part one of our analysis, focusing on Everett Golson and Tommy Rees.

Today, we focus on Dayne Crist and Andrew Hendrix.

Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist Out for Season, Patella Tendon Rupture

dayne crist

The injury bug has certainly been biting Notre Dame this season. And today it bit starting quarterback Dayne Crist again. Last week, in a loss to Navy, ND was without their top three weapons on offense: Theo Riddick, Kyle Rudolph and Michael Floyd.

This week they lost Crist, their starting QB, early in their home game versus Tulsa. He’s out for the season with a ruptured patellar tendon.

Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist Progressing Rapidly

dayne crist

In the shadow of Touchdown Jesus at Notre Dame Stadium a savior named Crist is possibly emerging. Remember his name is Crist not Christ, so don’t expect miracles right away. But Notre Dame junior QB Dayne Crist is putting up numbers that have been much better than anyone would expect given his lack of prior experience. He’s made only six career starts, all this season, and for a program that’s transitioning to a new coach and a new field general in 2010, his solid consistency within those six starts is a welcome comfort.

After going 24-39 for 242 with a touchdown pass and no picks versus Pitt, Crist discussed his progress.

“It’s still a work in progress, I would say.  It’s still continuing to develop.  We did some good things today and did some things that we’d like to correct,” he said.

Notre Dame vs. Pittsburgh: Brutally Honest Game Preview

notre-dame_cheerleaders

With three of their first four against ranked teams, Notre Dame had their “echoes woken up” on them right off the bat. But at least they had some desert last week in the form of rival Boston College. Having a 2-3 record after consuming the meat and potatoes of their schedule isn’t catastrophic. But now you can “shake down the thunder” because the cupcakes are coming! And with the remaining schedule, 7-5 in 2010 still seems very doable.

This week, they welcome Dave Wannstedt (a begrudgingly familiar site to Chicago Bears fans) and his 2-2 Pittsburgh Panthers to Notre Dame Stadium. Wanny has always been like a football version of a sitcom stock character. “Oh, that wacky neighbor Wanny! What hi-jinks and tomfoolery will ensue on this weekend’s episode?”

Well, if you want to learn more about Pitt and their players, start watching “America’s Most Wanted” because this team has more arrests than Rick James and Lindsay Lohan combined.

Notre Dame’s Theo Riddick Breaks out, Robert Hughes Next?

theo_riddick

Sophomore WR Theo Riddick entered Notre Dame’s game vs. Michigan State with just four receptions for 52 yards, but finished the contest with a career-high 10 catches for 128 yards and one touchdown. Riddick registered his first career 100-yard receiving game as he posted two grabs for 42 yards on Notre Dame’s opening scoring drive of the second half.

He hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from QB Dayne Crist with 1:29 to go in the third quarter to tie the score, 21-21. The reception was Riddick’s first career touchdown. A converted tailback, Riddick has a lot of speed and tackle-shedding ability. As in next level ability regarding both qualities.

“He’s worked really hard. It was really just a matter of time before he was going to be able to play at the level that we thought he could play at,” Coach Brian Kelly said.

Get to know the name of Fighting Irish wideout T.J. Jones

tj jones

Freshman wideout T.J. Jones was ranked the #20 freshman in the nation by Phil Steele. Last weekend, Jones became just the second Notre Dame freshman to record a receiving touchdown in a season opener (Michael Floyd, 2008 vs. San Diego State.) The five-yard touchdown reception with 10:20 left in the third quarter to gave Notre Dame a 20-3 lead. The TD catch was, obviously the first of his career.

“A great win for our confidence under a new coach, and a new offense, a great morale builder for next week. We felt comfortable, and ready to play even though we only had  a short time to learn these schemes,” Jones said after his memorable debut game.

Then against Michigan in week two, Jones broke an even bigger play, a 54 yard TD reception from a returning QB Dayne Crist. Which “woke up the echoes” in South Bend and changed momentum.

What can Notre Dame Expect from new QB Dayne Crist?

dayne-crist-nd

Quarterback is the most high profile position in all of team sports. At Notre Dame, the most high profile program in college football, it takes on an even greater prestige and responsibility.

Think of all the highly publicized quarterbacks in ND history: Brady Quinn, Jimmy Clausen, Joe Theismann, Steve Beuerlein. There’s even a subgroup of stars who wore the same number (#3)- Joe Montana, Rick Mirer, Ron Powlus.

But now that Clausen has left school early and joined the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, the position belongs to junior Dayne Crist, who like Clausen, was a five-star recruit out of California.
