buzz williams dance

Welcome to The Sports Bank’s third annual college basketball season preview series.  Two years we looked at 99 teams in 99 days.  Last year, we were slightly more aggressive and expanded to 111 teams in 111 days and will do so again as we look ahead to the 2012-2013 season.

We will rank the 75 power conference teams and top 36 mid-majors in reverse power ranking order.  We’ll break down rosters, transfers, incoming freshmen, non-conference schedules, and pick a player to watch for each team.

WARNING: As a Marquette alum and obsessive Golden Eagle basketball fan, this is going to take my lengthy, in-depth, nerdy previews to a whole new level.  If I were you, I would clear out ten minutes of your schedule before beginning to read this.

Marquette’s DJO and Crowder ready to live NBA Draft dream

marquette basketball

Following Wesley Matthews‘ breakout rookie campaign during the 2009-2010 NBA season, the Marquette Golden Eagles have seen players selected in the first round of the NBA Draft each of the past years; Lazar Hayward in 2010 and Jimmy Butler last summer.  A pair of MU ballers are expected to be selected tonight when Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder will likely hear their names called.

DJO for Three!

Darius Johson-Odom was one of the most electrifying players in the Big East this past college basketball season. The former Marquette star figures to be a late first round/early second round pick on NBA Draft night, June 28th.

The Sports Bank’s Ngozi Ekeledo stopped by the 2012 NBA Draft Combine’s Media Day and talked to Marquette’s “DJO”  about his draft night plans.

NCAA Tournament: West Regional bracket breakdown

missouri cheerleaders

Warning: I will not be responsible if you copy these brackets and are out of your NCAA Tournament pool by Sunday.  However, if you do listen to my college basketball wisdom and win some money, I want 20% of the pot or at least a shout-out on your twitter or facebook page.  In my opinion, the West Regional is the deepest and has the most exciting possible match-ups of the four regionals as it features ten teams who won their conference tournaments and enter the Big Dance playing a high level of basketball.

Legit Cause for Concern as Marquette Begins Big East Play

jaw crowder marquette

This is more than just my annual “over-reaction to a Marquette loss” article. It just so happens that the timing of this  comes after an embarrassing 74-57 defeat at the hands of Vanderbilt in which the score doesn’t accurately depict how big of a blow-out it actually was.

Now prior to the season if you would have told me that the Golden Eagles would finish 11-2 in their non-conference slate, I would have happily taken it without a second thought.  However, after ten straight wins to start the season there is now reason for concern as Marquette enters Big East play having lost two of their last three.

#16 Marquette Golden Eagles at #7 Wisconsin Badgers: Brutally Honest Preview

buzz williams marquette

I’m obviously biased, but I think MarquetteWisconsin is one of the best non-conference college basketball rivalries in the country.  The two fan bases pretty much despise one another and the past few years, it always seems to be a battle of Top 25 teams and a hard fought, down-to-the wire game.  Saturday afternoon, the 118th all-time meeting between the two schools takes place at the Kohl Center with both teams looking to add a signature win to their resume.  Here is a super nerdy, in-depth breakdown of Saturday’s game.

The Sports Bank “My Boy” Team

As the collegiate basketball season comes to a conclusion this evening, there is still hardware to be handed out that isn’t related to the National Championship. There’s the All-Americans, the Cousy Award, the Wooden Award and plenty of others, however here at The Sports Bank we like to honor players in a different manner.

Marquette: Looking Ahead to the 2011-2012 Season

Marquette basketball

Rather than dwell on the embarrassment that was Marquette’s Sweet 16 performance against North Carolina, I prefer to take the glass half-full approach and look ahead to next season.  Since it looks like Buzz Williams will not be fleeing the Brew City for Oklahoma, Missouri, or any of the other rumored coaching vacancies that his name has been linked to in the past couple weeks, the Golden Eagles only have to replace three seniors; Jimmy Butler, Dwight Buycks, and Joe Fulce.  (I guess four if you count Rob Frozena.)  Here is a look at how the 2011-2012 Marquette roster is shaping up and what I like and the role I would like to see each player have next season.

NCAA Tournament East Regional Sweet 16 Breakdown

My hands still sting from all the loud clapping I did during Marquette‘s third round victory against Syracuse.  As winnable as their first two games were, reality sets in a bit as the Golden Eagles have a mountain to climb if they want to complete an improbable run to the Final FourOhio State, North Carolina, and Kentucky are all powerhouse programs loaded with NBA talent.  Here is my breakdown of the Sweet 16 West Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

Marquette Advances to the Sweet 16

buzz williams marquette

“This team?” a friend asked me just minutes after Marquette sealed a third round NCAA Tournament victory against Syracuse to earn their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2003. Yes, THIS team.

Not the Golden Eagle group led by the Big Three of Wesley Matthews, Jerel McNeal, and Dominic James that suffered heart-wrenching second round losses in back-to-back years (Damn you Brook Lopez. Damn you ref who called Lazar Hayward for stepping over the line on that inbounds pass.)  Not last year’s overachieving bunch that earned a six seed and just seemed poised to make a run but were instead upset in the opening round by Washington.

THIS team that lost 14 games, finished as the 11th seed in the Big East Tournament, and frustrated the hell out of me far too often this year is one of sixteen teams still standing in the Big Dance.
