The Chicago Cubs today traded infielder Darwin Barney and a cash consideration to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named later. OUCH BABE! Remember when he was relevant? When he was possibly considered “a piece” in “the rebuild?” At least defensively, he was thought to be something, Now this is his fate.  

 The one AAA leader hits once gave Cubs fans such high hopes.

Chicago Cubs and Starlin Castro agree on 7 year extension

The Chicago Cubs and shortstop Starlin Castro have agreed to terms on a seven-year contract that includes a club option for an eighth season in 2020.  The contract covers Castro’s four arbitration seasons as well as his first three free agent seasons (club option for his fourth free agent season).  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Chicago Cubs sign 2nd rounder; list of signed draft picks

The Chicago Cubs signed right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood, their second round selection (67th pick overall) in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.  Underwood, from Pope High School in Georgia, will report to Mesa.

Overall in 2012, the Cubs signed each of their first 20 picks and 29 players overall selected in the draft.

Wayne Gretzky’s Kid Signs with Chicago Cubs Today

Infielder Trevor Gretzky, a seventh round selection in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft, by the Chicago Cubs, signed with the club today. Yes, Gretzky is the son of the Great One, Wayne Gretzky. The offspring of the greatest hockey player in history was selected out of Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, California where he was also the football team’s starting quarterback.

“The Cubs are thrilled to welcome Trevor Gretzky to the organization,” said General Manager Jim Hendry. “It was a pleasure working with the Gretzky family on this contract and we are excited by Trevor’s decision to begin his pro baseball career with the Cubs.”

Cubs take Offspring of Wayne Gretzky, Shawon Dunston on Day 2 of MLB Draft

The Chicago Cubs concluded the second day of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft yesterday by accumulating a total of 30 selected players. The third and final day of the draft is today with rounds 31-50. They took some legacy devices by selecting talented players with talented genes- including the offspring of hockey’s “the great one” Wayne Gretzky and 1982 #1 overall MLB pick Shawon Dunston.

But before we get to those guys…

…The Cubs selected infielder Daniel Vogelbach out of Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers , Florida in the second round (68th overall) and outfielder Ezekiel DeVoss out of the University of Miami ( Fla. ) in the third round (98th overall).

Go here for more on Vogelbach, who kind of resembles Chunk from “The Goonies.” Of course the kid with the truffle shuffle could never hit a 508 home run. He is committed to the University of Florida so we’ll see what happens.

Cubs take Javier Beaz with 2011 1st Round Draft Pick

The Chicago Cubs last night selected high school infielder Javier Baez out of Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville , Fla. with the 9th overall pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

“Javier has a tremendously live bat, is versatile in the field and we are happy to welcome him to the Cubs organization,” said Tim Wilken, Cubs Director of Amateur and Professional Scouting. “He has a great arm and is a smart base-runner in tune with the game.

“Our scouts got to know Javier and are impressed by his make-up. We saw him catch, play third base and play shortstop. He’s a quiet and thoughtful young man off the field who lets his game speak for itself on the field.”

Progress of the Chicago Cubs 2010 Draft Class

All the hulabaloo yesterday may have been over MLB Draft #1 overall pick Bryce Harper, but when the Draft signing deadline passed, the Chicago Cubs had agreed to terms with 29 of their 50 selections from their 2010 Draft class, including their first five, 15 of their first 16, 17 of their first 20 and 21 of their first 25 selections.

Included in the 29 players are four selections who agreed to terms with the club today: RHP Benjamin Wells, seventh round out of Bryant High School (Ark.); RHP Kevin Rhoderick, ninth round out of Oregon State University; LHP Casey Harman, 29th round out of Clemson University; and LHP Brian Smith, 40th round out of St. Mary’s Catholic (Ontario).
